Aproximació a les causes de l'avalot de Tàrrega de 1348

Abstract

A través de l'anàlisi de la documentació històrica i literària relativa a l'avalot del call de Tàrrega de 1348 que, d'entrada, posa en relació aquest episodi puntual i extrem de violència amb la difusió de l'epidèmia de pesta per tot Catalunya a partir de la imatge del jueu pecador, l'article vol mostrar les altres forces que, en aquest cas concret, ja feia temps que s'anaven congriant i que, amb les condicions idònies provocades per l'arribada de la pesta a la vila, es desfermaren en l'atac del call jueu. Causes de tipus religiós, econòmic, socio lògic, polític i ideològic que ens permeten d'aproximar-nos més i millor a la societat targarina, cristiana i jueva de la primera meitat del segle xiv, especialment la dels anys trenta i quaranta. Durant aquest període, alguns d'aquests elements apareixen per primera vegada mentre que d'altres es radicalitzen; tots ells, però, acabaran construint una imatge del jueu com a «enemic».Historical and literary documentation related to the riot that took place in Tàrrega’s Jewish quarter in 1348 immediately links that specific episode of extreme violence with the spread of the plague epidemic throughout Catalonia, based on the notion of the sinning Jew. By analysing such documentation, this article aims to highlight the other forces that, in this particular case, had been gathering for some time and which, with the plague’s arrival in the town having created just the right conditions, were unleashed in the attack on the Jewish quarter. The religious, economic, sociological, political and ideological factors involved paint a detailed picture of Tàrrega’s Christian and Jewish society in the first half of the 14th century, especially the 1330s and 1340s. Some of those elements emerged during the period in question, while others, already present, intensified. All of them would come to depict Jews as the “enemy”
