The flushing has a cleansing action on the uterus. No drugs were administered. One suture of heavy bandaging material was placed across the vulva. No straining was evident, and at the end of two days the suture was removed. A suppurative exudate with a foul odor was evident for about ten days, after which complete recovery was effected. -M. R. Flickinger, '43 151 Nails in Stomach of a Dog. In the U annals of canine surgical history, the case of a two and one-half months old collie pup and his stomach full of nails will hold a unique position. The patient, was presented with a history of having swal-lowed twenty roofing nails after discover-ing the family tool box in the cellar. After careful examination and palpa-tion, the diagnosis was made of foreign bodies in a very distended stomach. One could hear the nails jingle upon palpating the stomach. The doctor decided to fluor-oscope the animal and found many more nails present than was given in the his-tory. The temperature of the animal was 102 degrees, pulse rate was 98 and respira-tion was normal. The prognosis was favor-a1:>le, so the patient was prepared for op-eration by an intravenous injection of dextrose (20 per cent) and saline solu-tion 20cc. aa. The patient was anesthetized with nembutal and secured in the dorsal position. The field of operation was shaved, cleansed with ether and painted with Mercresin before a sterile shroud was placed in position. Gastrotomy A three inch incision was made lateral to the median line with considerable care. The stomach was grasped and drawn out as far as possible. Sterile cotton was pack-ed about the organ to prevent its return to the cavity and also prevent the contents of the stomach entering the peritoneal cavity after the incision of the stomach was made. The incision of the gastrotomy was made at the greater curvature of the stomach and the foreign bodies removed. The foreign bodies were located in the 82 stomach and duodenum, and consisted of eighty-eight inch and a half roofing nails, three screws and a pin. The mucous membrane of the stomach was sutured first, and then the muscular wall was sutured with silk using the Czerny-Lembert stitch. After returning the stomach to the peritoneal cavity, the skin, abdominal wall, and peritoneum of the laparotomy wound were sutured with silk using interrupted stitches. After ap-plying an antiseptic powder to the wound, and eight-tailed bandage was used to give support and prevent the possibility of a hernia. The following day the patient had a nor-mal temperature, pulse and respiration and was playing in the kennel. He drank broth four different times during the day. Milk was given the patient besides a dose of mineral oil the following day. 5 cc. homologous anti-canine distemper serum was given and the patient allowed to be-gin eating solid food again. The recovery was uneventful and the patient was dis-charged five days after the operation. -H. A. GreLl, '42 @J Unusual Maternal Dystocia. Upon vaginal palpation tumor-like en-largements wel'e found at the lateral walls of the vagina. The cervix was also nearly obliterated by the growths. It was decided that a Caesarean section must be resorted to in an effort to save the life of the dam. The patient was placed on the operating table and two ounces of chloral hydrate in 500 cc. of sterile-water were injected intravenously as an anesthetic. The right paralumbar region was prepared as an operative site. An incision was made through the abdominal wall down to the viscera. The tumorous condition of the organs at that area pre-vented the operator from delivering the The Veterinary Student calf; therefore another operative area was prepared, this time on the median line. The calf was delivered alive from the opening; however, it was in a very weak condition and soon died. Necropsy During the following night the cow died, and the next morning a necropsy was performed. When the abdominal cavity was opened, large tumors were seen which involved several of the organs. A 20 cm.-sized tumor was located between the reticulum and omasum. It involved the wall of the reticulum, the diaphragm and the lower aspect of the liver. The tumor was attached to the adjacent organs and tissues by strong adhesions and neo-plastic infiltrations. There was some slight metastasis of the tumor to the mediastinal lymph-nodes. Ex-tension of the tumor through the dia-phragm gave rise to adhesions between the diaphragm, the pericardium, and the lung on the right side. The pericardial sac contained a hemorrhagic fluid instead of the normal amber-colored fluid. There was a severe perirenal edema, which appeared as a gelatinous mass that enclosed both kidneys. The kidneys showed signs of moderate hydronephrosis. Many small calculi were found in the pel-vis and calyces of the kidneys. The pelvis of one kidney contaihed a slimy, dirty gray exudate. 0 one cm.-sized tumor was found in the cortex of the same kidney. The vaginal orifice of the urethra was occluded by a tumor and consequently there was a chronic dilatation of the bladder and ureters. This occlusion ex-plained the presence of the hydroneph-rosis. Tumors Massive tumors were found in the cer-vix and body of the uterus, particularly on the right side. A 15 cm.-sized tumor involved the tip of the right uterine horn. The entire pelvic region was also infil-trated with growths. Several blocks of tissue were removed from the involved organs for the purpose of preparing sections to determine the type of tumors. They were found to be lymphocytomas, and were similar in char-acter to others which have been examined at this clinic. The tumors were gray, somewhat fleshy, and more firm than lymph-node tissue. Because of the wide-spread distribution of these tumors it is not possible to state definitely where the primary growth was located. -R. J. Tobo!a, '42 1171 Free-martin Heifer. A local veteri-I~ narian sent in this interesting case history of a free-martin Holstein heifer. At two years of age, this heifer appeared to have a normal sexual cycle. She had been bred six or eight times and still came in heat regularly. This heifer showed no masculinity or coarseness as do many free-martins. Upon examination per rectum, the vag-ina and cervix were normal. The uterus was normal, tightly coiled, firm, and re-acted to touch. The oviduct felt large and coiled, but otherwise normal. The ovaries showed evidence of normal function. In one ovary were felt a large corpus luteum and several small follicles. In the other ovary, there was a well developed follicle. Upon examination with a vaginal specu-lum, a pink cervix was seen. There were no ulcerative or diseased areas on the wall of the vagina. A small strand of tis-sue could be detected hanging from the dorsal wall of the vagina above the ure-thral orifice. The animal was diagnosed as nonpreg-nant, and probably a nonbreeder due to some genital malformation. The owner was advised to slaughter the heifer. It was slaughtered in a few weeks and a post mortem examination was made of the geni-talia. The vagina and cervix were normal. The lumen of the uterus contained some mu-cus; and the caruncles were small, whitish in color, but normal in number. 84 The right ovary contained one large functional corpus luteum which was about one-half inch in diameter. There was also a small reddish-colored corpus luteum about two millimeters in diameter. A well developed follicle was located on the pole opposite the corpus luteum. The left ovary was much smaller than the right ovary and its surface showed several small follicles, none of which were more than two milli-meters in diameter. The oviducts were both abnormal throughout most of their course. Each oviduct consisted of several distended seg-ments of variable size and resembled a string of irregular sized beads. In each, the fimbria and anterior one to two inches of the tube were normal and completely canalized. Each tube had from ten to fif-teen of these beaded, cystic structures in its course. The cysts were not tightly dis-tended and would fluctuate somewhat on pressure. They varied in size from five to fifteen millimeters in length and from two to eight millimeters in diameter. The ovi-ducts were normal at the uterine end and a tubo-uterine opening could be observed. No semblance of a canal could be found between the cystic portions. That portion of the oviduct between the cysts appeared to be a thick strand of connective tissue. The fluctuations of the cystic structures made it impossible to palpate the abnor-mality. Diagnosis was made from history alone. -H. P. Lortz, '42 [I Chronic Tetanus in a Horse. On June 12, 1941, I was called to see a horse which the owner thought had te-tanus. The horse was a four-year old, grade, strawberry roan gelding, in excellent con-dition. The history disclosed that he had first been noticed to be stiff and excitable about ten days before. One week prior to that he had a slight sore neck caused by a short collar. The neck had healed perfectly with formation of very little cicatrical tissue.
