The paper startes from the emphasis bestowed by Marsilius of Padua on an accurate definition of the basic terms used in political philosophy. Because, according to him, most of political problems caused by the Papacy stems from the false interpretation of these terms, in which Pope attempt to justify an unsuitable temporal power maintaining even the supreme power or plenitudo potestatis. Therefore the philological analysis of the main terms, used by medieval thought to express the relationships of power, leads to place aright the human authority and refuse any political power for the Pope or priests in this world.El artículo parte de la importancia que Marsilio de Padua da a la definición precisa de los términos básicos de la filosofía política. Porque a su juicio, la mayoría de los problemas políticos causados por el Papado se derivan de la interpretación errónea de esos términos, que pretende justificar un poder temporal que no le corresponde y que sirve incluso para sostener un poder supremo o plenitudo potestatis. Por tanto, el análisis filológico de los principales términos que el pensamiento medieval emplea para expresar las relaciones de poder, conduce a situar correctamente la autoridad humana y rechazar el poder del Papa y de los sacerdotes en este mundo
