The Zuñi were the first native people of New Mexico that the Spanish established contact with. This essay deals with Zuñi-Spanish relations and the determination displayed by the Zuñi in protecting their culture over a period of almost three hundreed years. Also the efforts of the royal officials and the Franciscan missionaries in transforming these American Indians into loyal subjects of the Spanish Crown are described.Los zuñi fueron los primeros nativos de Nuevo México con los que los españoles establecieron contacto. Este trabajo trata de las relaciones zuñi-españolas y del empeño de los zuñi en proteger su cultura a lo largo de casi trescientos años. Se describen también los esfuerzos de los colonizadores y de los misioneros franciscanos para convertir a estos amerindios en leales súbditos de la Corona
