The White Mountain Apaches live on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona along with other people of the Western Apache. Together with the adjoining San Carlos Reservations to the south, this area includes much of the former territory of these Native Americans. In the spring and summer of 1869, the United States Army launched a series of campaigns designed to compel the White Mountain band to surrender. The present paper describes some of the events and the people involved in them which led to the establishment of the Fort Apache Indian reservation
