Some dialectologists reject the idea that the language spoken in the Canary Islands can be considered a dialect. The reasons given to support this thesis are two: the first one is that such a variety has no exclusive language features, and the second is that this speech variety is characterised by a great internal variation. This article explores these arguments, but at the same time puts forward some other arguments which oppose this idea; in others words, it is held that the Canary Island speech variety can be viewed as a dialect.Algunos dialectólogos rechazan la idea de considerar un dialecto a la modalidad lingüística hablada en Canarias. Las razones esgrimidas para apoyar esta posición son dos: dicha modalidad geográfica no tiene rasgos lingüísticos propios, a la vez que se caracteriza por una gran variabilidad interna.
