El presente artículo tiene como primer objetivo mostrar de forma exhaustiva los vínculos de Virginia Woolf con la cultura latina, partiendo de su formación personal y lecturas clásicas de autores latinos, para lo que se revisa su obra (incluyendo diarios y cartas, así como los fondos conservados de la biblioteca de los Woolf). Un segundo momento lo conforma la caracterización de los seis personajes de The Waves, que representan diversas actitudes ante el mundo clásico presentes en toda la obra de Virginia Woolf: los tres hombres conocen, admiran y emulan a los poetas latinos pero evidencian el rechazo progresivo al academicismo y la filología mal entendida, mientras que las tres mujeres están al margen de la lengua latina, y sólo evocan instintivamente algunos topoi evidentes, como el odi et amo catuliano.The main objective of this article is to show thoroughly the links between Virginia Woolf and Latin Culture. It starts with her personal education and the reading of classical Latin authors. This is based on her diaries, letters and the book collection kept in the Woolf’s library. Asecond approach is conformed by the depiction of the six characters in The Waves, which represent the different attitudes towards the classical world and which are present in the whole works of Virginia Woolf: the three men know, admire, and emulate the Latin poets but they also show an increasing refusal of academicism and misunderstood philology; on the other hand the three women are kept out from the Latin Language and they only evoke instinctively some evident «topoi», like Catullus’odi et amo
