En este artículo se realiza un análisis del medievalismo en la prensa ilustrada durante los años de 1860-1890, tanto en el campo de la literatura, como en el de la historia y el arte. Durante la segunda mitad de siglo se produjo una renovación de un interés nunca muerto hacia el mundo del Medievo, que, extraliterariamente, nos lleva desde el realismo retrospectivo de las artes plásticas a las aportaciones del positivismo científico, pasando por las más frívolas modas de la sociedad del momento. El imaginario medievalista fue construido a partir de una visión del pasado mediatizada por los vados movimientos intelectuales y sociales que conforman estas décadas, por ejemplo el socialismo o el feminismo. Resulta revelador constatar que los propios escritores realistas no dejaron de adentrarse en el mundo del Medievo y cómo el tratamiento de éste evolucionó de forma significativa desde el Romanticismo al Modernismo.TUs artiele deals with medievalism in the illustrated magazines during the second halfofthe nineteenth century, between 1860 and 1890. This movement concems Art as well as Literature and History. A renovation of a never ending interest towards the Middle Ages happened in these years, from the retrospective realism of plastic arts to the achievements of scientific positivism and the most frivolous fashions of modem society. The imagery of the Middle Ages was built up starting from a conception of past that was influenced by the different intellectual and social movements found in this moment, for example socialism or feminism. Realizing how realist writers were also attracted to Ihe medieval world, and how this medievalism developes from Romantieism to Modernism gives us imponant revelations about culture in this time
