The oriental cultures recognize the enormous power of the word. Words can create and change realities, cause irreparable damage, or, on the other hand, “open gates of iron”. In this article a corpus of around 100 Arabic and Hebrew proverbs is presented, that treat the Power of the Word. They advise man to be prudent in his speech or even to keep silent. Furthermore, in the first part we treat the importance of the correct and beautiful expression, or the aesthetics of the words, especially in the frame of the Arabic culture.Las culturas orientales reconocen la enorme fuerza de la palabra para crear y cambiar realidades, causar daños irreparables, o, por otro lado, para “abrir puertas de hierro”. En este artículo presentamos un corpus de alrededor de 100 proverbios y refranes árabes y hebreos que tratan este tema. Ellos aconsejan al hombre ser prudente en sus palabras, le advierten del perjuicio que su lengua puede causar, y en ocasiones recomiendan el silencio. Además, en la primera parte presentamos la importancia del “buen decir”, o de la estética del discurso, especialmente en la cultura árabe
