In 1882, Professor Edwin Lewis delivered, in Arabic, a speech at the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut entitled Knowledge, Science, and Wisdom, in which he defended the scientific method and mentioned the example of Charles Darwin and his theory. The speech brought on his expulsion from his post, and the students began shortly after the first student strike in the Arab world.
