The Socratic Dialogue, a method of philosophical dialogue developed by a German philosopher, Leonard Nelson early 20th century, is praciticed today in diverse forms. It procedes in a unique way according to a set of rules, which fascinates and at the same time puzzles those who participate. What is the aim of the Socratic Dialogue? What is ground of its unique procedure? This paper aims to clarify the theoretical ground of the Socratic Dialogue, referring to Nelson's Philosophy. Today's Socratic Dialogue no doubt inherits Nelson's practice of Socratic Method, but the relationship between his practice and his philosophical theory is not necessarily clear, while it is obvious that the Socratic Dialogue owes what it is today to the experiences, not theories, of those who have been active in practicing the Socratic Dialogue, especially Gustav Heckmann. It can be reasonably assumed, howerer, that Nelson considered the dialogue essential in the art of philosophizing, not only of educational value
