The first part of the article analyses some examples of particular onomastic terms and their meanings. It attempts to illustrate the differences between different languages and onomastics schools and to show how the further development of onomastic research could be improved by means of adopting a more unified terminology. In the next part, the author informs about recent activities of the Terminology Group of the International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS), the aim of which is – on the basis of existing dictionaries of onomastic terminology and excerpts from onomastic works – to elaborate an international manual of current onomastic terms with their definitions. Last, but not least, the study also aims to lay the ground for a new, revised and enlarged edition of the Osnoven sistem i terminologija na slovenskata onomastika (Basic System and Terminology of Slavonic Onomastics)
