Tämä opinnäytetyö on osa VKK-Metro-hankkeen tutkimus- ja kehittämistoimintaa. Hankkeen tarkoituksena on lisätä varhaiskasvatuksen tutkimustietoa ja kehittää varhaiskasvatuksen dokumentointia ja arviointia. Hankkeen yhteistyökumppaneita ovat pääkaupunkiseudun kunnat, Helsingin yliopisto ja sosiaalialan osaamiskeskus SOCCA ja se toteutui vuosina 2008–2009.
Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin Vantaalla Vapaalan päiväkodissa, joka on eräs VKK-Metro-hankkeen tutkimuspäiväkodeista. Vapaalan päiväkodin kehittämisteemana on ”kuvien käyttö oppimisprosessin tukena ja vahvistajana” ja tähän teemaan liittyen opinnäytetyön aiheeksi muodostuikin leikinvalintataulun tekeminen ja sen käytön seuranta esiopetusryhmässä. Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli leikinvalintataulun suunnittelun ja toteutuksen jälkeen selvittää, miten lapset käyttävät taulua ja miten he itse kokevat sen käytön.
Opinnäytetyössä käytettiin laadullisia arviointimenetelmiä ja aineisto kerättiin osallistuvan havainnoinnin avulla sekä lapsia haastattelemalla. Näiden molempien arviointimenetelmien tukena käytettiin videointia ja nauhuria. Opinnäytetyöstä syntyi myös tuote, leikinvalintataulu– opas. Tiedonkeruun toteutusajankohta oli kevät 2009 ja aineisto analysoitiin teemoittelun avulla kesällä 2009.
Tulokset osoittivat, että leikinvalintataulu on parantanut monin osin Vapaalan päiväkodin esiopetusryhmän arjen sujuvuutta. Taulun myötä lapset ovat rohkaistuneet ottamaan vastuuta toiminnastaan ja tekemään itsenäisiä päätöksiä. Tuloksissa korostui leikinvalintataulun käyttöönoton jälkeen vähentynyt leikin ohjaamisen tarve sekä yleisen ilmapiirin rauhoittuminen. Taulun myötä oli huomattavissa lasten parempi sitoutuneisuus valitsemaansa leikkiin sekä leikkien pitkäkestoisuuden lisääntyminen. Leikinvalintataulun heikkoutena havainnoitiin joissakin määrin sen vaikutus leikkien sisältöjen köyhtymiseen ja spontaanien leikkien vähenemiseen.
Tulosten perusteella leikinvalintataulu koettiin hyödylliseksi varhaiskasvatuksen työvälineeksi, joten sen tunnettavuutta kannattaisi lisätä muissakin varhaiskasvatuksen yksiköissä. Leikinvalintataulu suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin esiopetusryhmässä, joten tätä aihetta voisi jatkossa tutkia esimerkiksi pienempien tai erityisen tuen tarpeessa olevien lasten parissa. Opinnäytetyön ohessa saatiin uutta tietoa leikinvalintataulun käytöstä ja se dokumentoitiin opaskirjaseen. Lasten leikin valintaan liittyvät kehittämisen kohteet voivat tuottaa merkityksellistä tietoa varhaiskasvatukseen, sillä nykypäivänä lasten on yhä vaikeampi keskittyä valitsemaansa leikkiin ja neuvotella leikin sisällöistä ikätovereidensa kanssa.This thesis is a part of the research and development work of the VKK-Metro program. The aim of VKK-Metro is to increase research data of early childhood education and to improve its documentation and evaluation. This project co-operates with the metropolitan area of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki, and the Center of Expertise on Social Welfare (SOCCA), and it’s actualized in 2008-2009.
The thesis was put into practice in Vantaa, Vapaala Day-care Center, which is one of the daycare centers investigated in the VKK-Metro program. The theme of improvement in Vapaala Day-care Center is “using pictures as support and reinforcement of a learning process” and related to this theme, the subject of this thesis was formed to make a high scope -board in a pre-school education group and follow-up the use of it. Therefore, the goal of this thesis was, after making and investigating the use of the high scope –board, to define how children utilize the board and how they experience the use of it themselves.
Qualitative research methods were used in the thesis and the material was collected using partaking observation and children´s interview. A camcorder and a recorder were used as assistance. The resulting material was transcribed, and the method used for its means of analysis was dividing it into themes. Out of the thesis arose also a product – the high scope –board guidebook. The data was collected in spring 2009 and the material was analyzed in summer 2009.
The results showed that the board has improved the everyday fluency in Vapaala Day-care Center in many ways. By using the board, children are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and to make independent decisions. These results were emphasized by a reduced need for play guidance and a more peaceful atmosphere than before the introduction of the board. With the board, a better commitment to the play chosen, and increase in duration of plays were observed. Based on the observation, as disadvantages can be seen the effect of the board on the contents of plays and the effect on the decrease of spontaneous plays.
According to the results, the high scope –board was seen as a beneficial tool in early childhood education, whereupon it could be profitable to increase the recognizability of the board. The high scope –board was designed and realized in a pre-school education group – therefore this subject could in future be studied, for instance, among younger children or children with special needs. New data of a high scope –board was got during the thesis and data has been documented in public internet guidebook. Targets of improvement and followup studies related to the thesis could produce significant information for early childhood education, as children today are more and more incapable of concentrating on a play they have chosen and of negotiating about the contents of the play with their coevals
