Työn päätavoitteena oli tehdä Rauman kaupungin tietohallinnolle verkkodokumentaatio Rauman kaupungin tietoliikenneverkosta sekä laatia dokumentin pohjalta kehitysratkaisuja verkon parantamiseksi. Dokumentaation tarkoituksena oli parantaa verkon hallittavuutta sekä antaa apuväline verkon tuleville muutossuunnitteluille. Kaupungin toimipisteiden laitekaapit ristikytkentöineen valokuvattiin ja kytkennät merkittiin muistiin. Todellinen dokumentaatio tehtiin valokuvien ja muistiinpanojen pohjalta NetViz-ohjelmistolla. Projektiin ei dokumentoitu kaikkia verkon osia. Rajaukset tehtiin kuitenkin selvästi, jolloin muut verkon osat voidaan lisätä dokumenttiin helposti. Verkon kehityksen tärkeimmät osa-alueet olivat verkon IP-osoitteiden ja virtuaaliverkkojen selkeyttäminen. Osoiteavaruus sekä virtuaaliverkot jaettiin kehityssuunnitelmassa uudella tavalla. Tämä vähensi verkkojen määrää. Kehityssuunnitelmaan sisältyi myös muutamia muita pienempiä muutoksia. Verkkodokumentaatio muuttuu verkon mukana nopeasti. Uudet ratkaisut saattavat vaatia verkkorakenteen muutoksia. Kaikki tulevat muutokset voidaan tehdä helposti tukeutuen selkeään ja tarkkaan dokumentaatioon tietoliikenneverkosta.This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by the IT Administration Services of the Town of Rauma. There were two main objectives: documentation of the data network and future development of the data network based on the documentation. The work begun with photography of the network hardware in almost all the premises of the Town of Rauma. The collected data was gathered to a single program. The program used was NetViz 7.2. Not every detail of the data network was gathered because of the time frame given to this thesis. The data left out can be added easily to the project later. Another part of this thesis was development of the network, which largely consists of changes in the IP addresses and Virtual LAN numbers. The purpose of these changes was to clarify the network, improve performance and make the administration of the network easier. The development plan also included a few smaller changes. The network and its documentation change very quickly. New solutions might require changes in the network infrastructure. To make these changes, IT Administrators need exhaustive and up-to-date documentation
