My name is James Letts and I am a graduate in Spanish and Latin American Studies from the University of Portsmouth in southern England. I began learning Portuguese ab initio in late-2006 at evening classes at university. I first went to Brazil in 2007 on a two and a half-month trip visiting Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In 2008 I spent four months working for an English school in Belo Horizonte. Since my first visit I have found Brazil to be a fascinating place; during my time there I met many Brazilians and discovered a lot about their culture, society, beliefs and general attitudes. I found myself having to reconcile the reality of Brazil with the common beliefs that are widely-held outside of the country; I was surprised by how different Brazil was to how I imagined it before 2007. Physical features (such as climate, landscape and urban space), societal features (class structure and profound wealth inequalities), and technological issues (such as the widespread use of alternative fuels such as alcohol) all left me with a strong impression of Brazil – though I spent most of my time only in Belo Horizonte – and made me realise how little is known by the majority of foreigners about the reality of this country. Eu visitei o Brasil pela primeira vez por dois meses em 2007 – conheci o Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Minas Gerais. Também trabalhei como estagiário numa escola de inglês em Belo Horizonte, de fevereiro 2008 até julho 2008. Desde minha primeira vez no Brasil, fiquei impressionado com o país; durante minhas duas visitas conheci muita gente brasileira, a sua cultura, e aprendi um pouco sobre a sociedade brasileira e como funciona. Para mim, ficou claro que existe muita diferença entre a realidade do Brasil e a imagem que muitos estrangeiros têm do país sul-americano. Também me impressionou o grande conhecimento que muitos brasileiros têm do meu país (a Grã-Bretanha) e outros lugares como os Estados Unidos e a Europa. Muitos brasileiros têm uma grande vontade de viajar e, com mentes abertas, experimentar lugares fora do seu mesmo país – muitos deles (não todos) conhecem bem o mundo fora. O que eu experimentei no Brasil me inspirou fazer este projeto. O Brasil é um país de viajantes; muitos brasileiros viajam, moram, trabalham e estudam no estrangeiro. Muitos têm experiência de países, culturas e línguas estrangeiros – dos Estados Unidos de America, da Europa, Grã-Bretanha e Australia. Assim, muitos brasileiros conhecem estrangeiros e aprendem o conhecimento que têm sobre o Brasil. Alguns preconceitos comuns acerca do Brasil incluem: Os brasileiros, sendo localizados na América do Sul, falam espanhol. O Brasil é Amazonas – todo o mundo mora na selva ou na praia. Assim, a selva e a praia são as duas imagens maiores que os estrangeiros geralmente têm do Brasil. Também existe o estereótipo da suposta sensualidade das mulheres brasileiras que são prontas para ter o sexo a qualquer oportunidade. O que os estrangeiros as vezes perguntam os brasileiros: Tem carros no Brasil? Tem ruas de asfalto? Os brasileiros têm telefones? E celulares? Os brasileiros têm computadores? E internet? Os brasileiros moram em cabanas na selva? São atacados por macacos? Você tem que ser burro para sinceramente perguntar tudo isso, más algumas pessoas sim perguntam. A realidade Os brasileiros falam português – talvez de uma forma mais dominante de que os portugueses. No Brasil, tem milhões de carros e Brasil também fabrica milhões de carros – tem fábricas de Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen e Chevrolet no país. O Brasil também produz e exporta aviões – de companhias brasileiras como Embraer. Ademas, o Brasil é um líder mundial no desenvolvimento de combustíveis alternativos – como alcool e etanol pela tecnologia Flex – mesmo os estados unidos se interessa pela tecnologia petroquímica brasileira. Tem cento e vinte e um (121) milhões de celulares no Brasil, e cinquenta (50) milhões de usários da internet. Obviamente, os brasileiros se interessam pelo internet, tecnologia e computadores. Os habitantes da Amazônia e o povo indígeno têm acesso gratuito à internet, apoiado pelo governo. Ademas, o Brasil tem a economia mais rica da América do Sul e é o nono poder económico do mundo. Além de apoiar as tecnologias da internet, o governo brasileiro também dá milhões de reais cada ano para a prevenção e o tratamento de HIV e AIDs – apoio que foi muito elogiado. Outrossim, o Brasil foi o primeiro país no mundo que executou um plano nacional contra AIDs.  Sobre o supramenciado estereótipo das mulheres brasileiras, talvez é devido a uma imagem estereotípica da carnaval, a praia, e mulheres poucas vestidas, ou talvez é devido à imagem de prostitução na América do Sul. Seja qual for, na realidade as mulheres brasileiras são umas das mais educadas, profissionais e independentes do mundo. Milhões de brasileiras trabalham em setores profissionais – muitas são advogadas, professoras, economistas, médicas, cientistas, e engenheiras.  Quero dizer que não sou nenhum especialista sobre o Brasil, nem me estou afirmando como um estrangeiro mais bem informado, criticando todos os outros. Há muita coisa sobre o Brasil que não compreendo. Estou meramente fazendo observações que o Brasil é um país tão rico, que é malentendido, de que existem tantos conceitos errados pelo mundo fora. É interessante como um país pode ser malentendido que é como um outro mundo. Quando eu visitei o Brasil, conheci o mundo brasileiro – um país facilmente tão rico, importante e interessante como os Estados Unidos ou a Grã-Bretanha, mas muito menos conhecido e entendido.  Quero deixar-lhes com uma noção interessante; quantas pessoas no mundo conhecem e têm uma imagem vívida sobre lugares como Nova York, a California, Texas, a Florida, ou Londres? E, (além da imagem de Rio de Janeiro, Carnaval e Amazonas), quantas pessoas estrangeiras têm uma idéia sobre Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, ou das belezas naturais de Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso ou Fortaleza? Acho que isso explica meu argumento.    A short podcast on foreign misconceptions about Brazil Brazil is a nation of travellers; countless Brazilians travel, live, work and study abroad. Many of them have experienced foreign countries, cultures and languages – in the USA, Europe, Great Britain and Australia. Therefore, many Brazilians know people from abroad and they discover the attitudes and opinions that foreigners have of Brazil. A few common misconceptions about Brazil include: Brazilians, being from South America, speak Spanish. Brazil is the Amazon – everybody lives in the jungle or on the beach. The jungle and the beach are the two main images that many foreigners have of Brazil. In some cases, there is a supposed sensuality of Brazilian women who are presumed by many foreigners to be sexually promiscuous and available. A few questions that non-Brazilians ask Brazilians: Do you have cars in Brazil? Do you have tarmac roads? Do Brazilians have telephones? Do they have mobile phones? Do Brazilians have computers? And access to the internet? Do Brazilians live in huts in the jungle? Do they get attacked by monkeys? One would have to be stupid to sincerely ask someone these questions, but some people do indeed ask them. The reality Brazilians speak Portuguese – Brazilian Portuguese is perhaps more dominant a language than that spoken by the Portuguese. There are millions of cars in Brazil. Hundreds of thousands of cars are manufactured in Brazil every year as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Chevrolet all have factories there. Brazil also produces and exports aeroplanes – Embraer being one of the leading Brazilian aircraft manufacturers. Furthermore, Brazil is a world leader in the development of alternative fuels such as alcohol and ethanol used in the ‘Flex’ engines. Even the United States is showing an interest in the Brazilian petrochemical industry. There are one hundred and twenty one million mobile phones in Brazil, and fifty million internet users. Obviously many Brazilians have a great interest in the internet, modern technology, and computers. Inhabitants of the Amazon region, including indigenous peoples, have free access to the internet thanks to a scheme provided by the national government. Furthermore, the Brazilian economy is the largest in South America and the ninth largest in the world. As well as supporting technological schemes, the Brazilian government also invests millions of dollars every year in projects aimed at preventing and treating HIV and AIDs – this investment has received international praise. Also, Brazil was the first country in the world to implement a national plan to combat AIDs.  Regarding the aforementioned stereotype of Brazilian women, perhaps this is fuelled by a stereotypical image of Carnival, the beach, and scantily-dressed women, or perhaps it is due to the image of prostitution in South America. Whatever the reason may be, Brazilian women in reality are amongst the most professional, well educated and independent in the world. Millions of Brazilian women have professional careers – many are lawyers, teachers, economists, doctors, scientists, and engineers.  I would like to say that I am no specialist on Brazil, nor am I claiming to be an educated foreigner, criticising all other non-Brazilians. There are many things that I do not understand about Brazil. Through this podcast, I am simply making the observation that Brazil is an extremely rich and fascinating place, but it is also misunderstood and there are many misconceptions about Brazil held by those abroad. When I first visited Brazil, it seemed to me like visiting another world. But it is interesting to think how this country is easily as rich and interesting as the US or Great Britain, but much less prominent and well known in the world.  I would like to leave you with a thought: how many people in the world have a vivid image in their minds of places like New York, California, Texas, Florida, or London? And (apart from images of Rio de Janeiro, Carnival and the Amazon) how many non-Brazilians have heard of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, or of the natural beauty found in Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, or Fortaleza? I believe that this illustrates my point.
