COMPUTER FORMULATION AND SOLUTION OF ALGEBRA PROBLEMSGIVEN IN A RESTRICTED ENGLISHA hand analysis of eighty algebra word problems has been made. Several prelimi-nary processing programs were written in COMIT and debugged. It was then found thata more general list-processing language such as LISP would be much more convenient.However, a combination of the two languages would be better than either alone. There-fore, a COMIT interpreter (METEOR) was written in LISP, and debugged. It willhandle simple COMIT rules and program flow, with added provision for mnemoniclabelling of constituents. Any LISP function can be applied to a constituent, or set ofconstituents, from the work space. The input-output features of COMIT have beenimplemented, but the rules are entered in a LISP format. Certain other changes havebeen made to COMIT format which seemed natural and facilitated programming.A memorandum has been published by the Artificial Intelligence Group whichdescribes in detail the METEOR program and its use in the LISP system.D.
