Accumulation of persistent organic chemicals and metals in stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Canary islands (Spain)

Abstract

Abstract 420. IUTOX,Julio 2004.Tampere, FinlandiaBlubber and liver samples were collected from eleven bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) stranded on the canaries coast, between 1993 and 2002. Concentration of twelve congeners of polychorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and eleven organochlorine (OCs) pesticides were measured in blubber. Three organotin compounds and four heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb and Hg) were also determined in liver. Pathological studies were also considered. he most abundant organochlorine (OCs) pesticides were DDT and its metabolites, followed by some compounds of the cyclodiene group, principally chlordane.Peer reviewe
