Scaleinsects insert their mouthparts into planttissues and suck out the sap. When many ofthese insects attack a plant, its growth may bestunted; its leaves may develop yellow blotches;the branches may die; and some or all of theleaves may fall off.Although scale insects are common, they are prob-ably the most misidentified of all insect groups. Scaleinsects are generally small (1/4 inch long or less) andoften mimic various plant parts, such as bark andbuds. Other species appear as small, white, waxyblotches or small bits of cotton on leaves and stems.The one attribute of scale insects that probably leadsto most misidentification is that they appear to benonliving: Once the young settle on a plant, they gen-erally don’t move and are often overlooked.To control scale insects most effectively, you needto know how to identify them, when in their lifecycle to treat them, and what methods and chemicalswork best for the various species. It’s also good to beable to recognize their natural enemies, so you canuse them to help you combat scale insects.Knowing this can help you:■ Time your pesticide applications to control themost scale insects;■ Avoid wasting time and money applying chemi-cals that don’t work at certain stages of theinsect’s life cycle; and■ Release fewer unnecessary chemicals into theenvironment.The life cycles of scale insects vary considerablyamong species. Their life span may last from a fewweeks to several months. The various species canhave from one to several overlapping generationsevery summer. Females can give birth to live young orlay eggs.Depending on the species, scale insects can spendthe winter (overwinter) as eggs, young or adults.Under greenhouse conditions, they may not overwin-ter at all.However, all scales have two life stages in com-mon: a mobile stage, generally followed by a motion-less development period.The mobile stage is the first developmental stage,in which the nymphs move about. At this stage theyare called “crawlers.” Scale crawlers generally emergein spring or early summer and at the beginning ofeach generation. This is the stage at which scaleinsects can be controlled most effectively.Crawlers search for a suitable location on the planton which to settle and feed. Once they settle, scaleinsects enter the motionless development period.Most species never move again in their lives. Scale insects feed by inserting their hairlike mouth-parts into plant tissue and siphoning the plant’s sap.While feeding, many species excrete a sweet, stickyliquid referred to as “honeydew.” If many of theminfest a plant, the honeydew can accumulate on thestems and leaves, making them appear shiny.In humid areas, a fungus can grow on the honey-dew. Because this fungus makes the plant leaves andstems appear sooty, its common name is “sooty mold”(Fig. 1).*Extension entomologists, The Texas A&M UniversitySystem.Figure 1. Under these conditions,scale insect populations can skyrocket.As scale insects grow, many species exude waxfrom pores on their bodies. This wax generally formsa protective covering that may or may not be attachedtheir body. Scale insects with hardened wax coveringsthat detach easily from their soft bodies underneathare referred to as “hard” or “armored” scales (Fig. 2).Two other groups of scales produce waxy coveringsthat are attached to their bodies: Soft scales, which are mottled light to darkbrown; adults generally do not move. Mealy bugs, which are covered with soft, whitewax that can be rubbed off easily (Fig. 3-4). Alldevelopmental stages of mealy bugs have legsand can crawl, but they move slowly and infre-quently.Some of the more common plant infesting scaleinsects and plant symptoms are shown in Table 1.Sampling for scale crawlersBecause of their protective wax covering, mostscale insects are very difficult to control with insecti-cides once they have settled. Scale insects are mostvulnerable to spray formulations of contact insecti-cides during the crawler stage of development.Generally, the crawler stage lasts from 2 to 4weeks; however, scales that have multiple generationsper year may have crawlers present at all times. Todetect this stage of development, you need to inspectscale-infested plants often.  Scale crawlers are tiny (1/16 inch long or smaller),making them difficult to see. To see if scale crawlersare on a plant, use either of these two simple detec-tion methods:Method 1: In early spring before new plantgrowth occurs, wrap a small piece of double-sidedsticky tape to a stem above a scale infestation (Fig. 5).Crawlers that are moving to new locations willbecome caught on the tape. Crawlers move towardlight. Placing the tape above the scale infestation willincrease your chances of finding the crawlers if theyare present.If crawlers are on the plant, the tape will becomecovered with tiny, cream to light-yellow specks. Amagnifying glass can help you verify that crawlers arepresent.Method 2: Gently tap a scale-infested stem or leafover a sheet of white paper. If scale crawlers are pre-sent, they will fall onto the paper, where you can eas-ily see them moving about.Using natural enemies to control scalesMany natural enemies—small parasitic wasps, lady-bird beetles and some fungi—can significantly reducescale insect populations. Before using pesticides,check for natural enemies. Ladybird beetles (com-monly known as ladybugs) are easy to spot, but para-sitic wasps are more difficult to see because they areso small.Parasitic wasps often emerge from scales by chew-ing small, round holes in them. Examine severalscales to see if they have these exit holes (Fig. 6).Also, check to see if ants are tending the scales; if so,natural enemies may be ineffective.If natural enemies are present and it appears thatthere are few scale insects or that no ants are attend-ing them, wait a few days and check again. Obscure scale on oak limb.Soft scalesCalico, kermes, lecanium, tortoise and wax scalesThese large (up to 3/8 inch), generally mottled patterns of light to darkbrown appear as raised hemispherical bumps on leaves and twigs. Mostspecies produce much honeydew, and sooty mold is common underhumid conditions. Soft scale infestations can cause leaves to yellow, dieand fall off prematurely, and limbs and entire plants to die. Host plantsinclude oaks, conifers, elms, redbud, pyracantha, hollies, euonymus,camellia, citrus and many houseplants.Pit scalesThese small, round scales are found in the centers of depressed areas orpits on leaves and stems. They are most often found on sweetgum,Pittosporum, mock orange, ligustrum, ilex and Texas mountain laurel.Hard or armored scalesThese scales are small (1/8 inch), elongate to oval, and generally fromdark gray to white. They infest all parts of exposed plant tissue and cancause leaves to turn yellow and fall off and the plant to be less healthyand even die. Hard scales do not produce honeydew. They infest manyspecies of outdoor trees, shrubs, and grasses, and indoor ornamentalplants. Some of the more commonly infested plants include oaks, fruittrees, conifers, euonymous, holly, privet and ferns.(continued from page 2)Some natural enemies are available for managers ofinteriorscapes and greenhouses to buy to control scaleinsects and mealybugs. These specific parasites arespecies of Leptomastix, Pseudaphycus, Rhyzobius andAphytis. A small beetle called the mealybug destroyer(Crytolaemus) also is available. Alwaysconsider removing, destroying and replacing heavilyinfested ornamental shrubs and trees. Insecticideslabeled for control of scale insects may harm benefi-cial insects.Pe sticides for scale contro lMany pesticides are available to consumers want-ing to control scale insects (Table 2). These can bedivided into three general groups based on how theycontrol scales: Some poison the insects; others suffo-cate them or cause them to dry out and die; and stillothers, called insect growth regulators or “IGRs,” dis-rupt molting.Poisons: The most common group of poisons isthe nerve poisons. These insecticides disrupt aninsect’s nervous system. They are absorbed throughthe insect’s exoskeleton “skin” and are considered“contact insecticides.” Common contact insecticidesinclude carbaryl, diazinon, chlorpyrofos, pyrethrins,and permethrin.Other poisons have “systemic” activity, meaningthat when they are applied to the plant’s leaves orroots, the plant absorbs the insecticide into its tissue,and the scale insect is poisoned when it feeds fromthe plant. Longtail mealybug.Mealybugs and cottony scalesMealybugsMealybugs derive their name from the whitish, waxy or mealyappearance of the wax they secrete. These waxy secretions in somespecies project into long strings or filaments, hence the commonname “longtail mealybug.” These filaments are easily broken.Mealybugs can infest all parts of the plant and stunt its growth, dis-color and deform the leaves, and eventually kill the plant. Mealybugsalso produce honeydew, which can cause sooty mold to appear.Mealybugs more commonly infest indoor ornamental plants.Cottony scalesCottony scales derive their namefrom the cottony wax they pro-duce in which to enclose theireggs. These scales generally gounnoticed until they producethese cottony egg masses. A morecommonly encountered cottonyscale is the cottony camellia scale,which often infests camellia,holly, yew, rhododendron, maples,euonymus, English ivy, mulberryand hydrangea.Some products, such as acephate and dimethoate,are both contact and systemic insecticides.  Suffocating/drying pesticides: Scale insects aresuffocated by oils and dried out by insecticidal soaps.Consumers may buy two kinds of oils for treatingscale insects: dormant oils; and summer horticulturalor parafinnic oils. Both types affect immature andadult scale insects. Dormant oils may be applied onlyto deciduous plants (trees and shrubs that lose theirleaves in the fall) when the plants are dormant. Becareful with evergreen plants: These oils may injureor discolor some species.Summer oils are lighter than dormant oils and maybe applied during the summer on deciduous plantsand throughout the year on many evergreen trees andshrubs. Some horticultural oils may also be mixedwith other insecticides to control scale insects moreeffectively.Insecticidal soaps disrupt the waxy cuticle or “skin”of the insect, which eventually causes the insect todry out (desiccate) and die. IGRs: Insect growth regulators interfere with animmature scale insect’s ability to molt (shed its outerskin to allow for growth); in some cases, IGRs sup-press egg development. Although these insecticidesoften act more slowly than contact insecticides, theycan effectively control many species of scales.Examples of IGRs include azadirachtin and pyriprox-yfen.Most insecticides are formulated as: Wettable or soluble powders (WP, S), which aremixed with water and sprayed onto an infestedplant; Emulsifiable concentrates (EC), which also aremixed with water and sprayed onto infestedplants; Granulars (G), which generally are appliedaround the base of a plant and watered into thesoil; Dusts, which are applied directly onto infestedplants;  Aerosols, which also are applied directly ontoplants.Beware of phytotoxicity, which is the damage thatpesticides cause to plants. Many plants are sensitive tovarious pesticides. If you’re in doubt, treat a smallpart of the plant, then check a day or two later to seeif the plant tissue is yellowed or burned. Many pesti-cide labels list the plants that are susceptible to phyto-toxicity if those products are used on them.5Table 2. Some insecticides listed can be used by a commercial operator only.*Generally, restricted-use products that are available only to licensed pest-control operators.Pe sticide application to control scalesPesticides work best on scale crawlers. Becausecrawlers can take from 2 to 4 weeks to emerge com-pletely, check the scale-infested plant at least weeklyuntil you see them. For effective control, you mayneed to apply pesticides two to four times at 5- to7-day intervals, because most pesticides work for lessthan a week, but crawlers from a single generationcan hatch over several weeks.Regardless of the number of applications needed,you must cover the plant thoroughly with insecticideeach time, particularly when you’re using contactinsecticides. Cover both sides of the leaves and all thetwigs and branches.Dormant oils should be applied before springgrowth begins, when temperatures are above 45degrees F for 24 to 48 hours. Follow the instructionson the product label on how to dilute and apply thepesticide.Apply summer sprays when temperatures arebelow 90 degrees for 24 to 48 hours. Spray two tofour times at 7- to 10-day intervals when the crawlersare active. Emulsifiable concentrate (EC) sprays arepreferred. Summer oils can be used alone or in com-bination with other insecticides.  When scales are on plants that are actively grow-ing, apply systemic insecticides such as imidaclopridaround the base of scale-infested trees, shrubs or pot-ted plants. Follow the instructions on the productlabel on dilution and application rates.To control scales infesting houseplants, you can usea commercially available insecticidal soap or makeyour own soap solution by diluting a mild dishwash-ing detergent. If possible, dip the entire plant into thesoap solution, otherwise thoroughly cover all plantparts using a hand-held sprayer.You may need to reapply the soap to control thescales effectively. You may also use systemic insecti-cides by applying the appropriate solution around thebase of the plant. Check the product label for applica-tion and dilution rates.To remove minor scale infestations on small house-plants, use cotton balls or swabs to brush rubbingalcohol onto the plant.Contact insecticides, such as aerosol sprays con-taining pyrethrins and permethrin, may also be usedon houseplants, but they don’t work for long. Reapplythem at 1- to 3-day intervals until the scales are con-trolled. Spray any aerosol from at least 12 inches fromthe plant.Evaluate the effectiveness of treatments to deter-mine if you need to make further applications. To seeif you’ve controlled the scales successfully, slide yourthumb across a group of scales. If scales are dead,they will be dry and hollow and will flake off easily.Policy state m e nt for chemical control suggestionsRegulations on insecticides change frequently, andchanges may have occurred since this publication wasprinted. The pesticide user is always responsible forthe pesticide residues’ effects on plants or householdgoods, as well as for problems that arise when neigh-boring property or plants are contaminated. Alwaysread and follow carefully the instructions on the con-tainer label.6Table 3.
