 1   MBLWHOI Library Joint User Committee Report 2009-2010  1.0 Committee Agenda The Joint User Committee (JUC), comprised of representatives from the Woods Hole scientific community's major supporting institutions (MBL, WHOI, and USGS), met once during the year and was on-call if needed.  The JUC continues to focus on long-range planning for the Library’s collections, facilities, budget reductions and services, and the impact of open archives/public access initiatives.  John Farrington assumed the chairmanship of the committee in keeping with the new official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed by the MBL and WHOI.  2.0 Staff and Volunteers Maggie Rioux retired from her position as Systems Librarian. Alex Dorsk joined the staff at the Data Library as the systems/data librarian. John Furfey was promoted to Senior Automation Systems Officer. Diane Rielinger was promoted to the position of Assistant Director for Administrative and Financial Services and then assumed the role of Acting Library Director in July 2010 as Cathy Norton is on leave.  Elena Iourieva returned for the summer and resumed her duties as library assistant.  The MBLWHOI Library Informatics group grew substantially as Chuck Ha was hired as Data Manager/Developer, Lakshmi Manohar Akella  and John Hufnagle as Scientific Informatics Analysts and Anna Shipunova as a Data Analyst.    Volunteers MBL, Rare Books & Special Collections: Millie Huettner, David Shepro, Ann Weissmann and Virginia Reynolds.     Virtual Herbarium Project: Joe DeVeer, Paul Freyheit, Carol Knox, Nancy McDonald, Pam Polloni, Arlene Rogers, and Jacqueline Webster.   WHOI Data Library and Archives (DLA): Dick Backus, Nat Corwin, Werner Deuser, and Frank Taylor   3.0 Activities & Services  3.1 Library Instruction  Library staff gave lectures, tours, orientations and provided library instruction to the Woods Hole Scientific Community. This included but was not limited to general introductions to the physical and digital library, Rare Book Room tours, classes focusing on specific databases, one-on-one instruction, and informational sessions focusing on publishing requirements by granting agencies. The Library again hosted two sessions of Biomedical Informatics in conjunction with  2the National Library of Medicine. The course continues to evolve as a unique training opportunity for physicians, librarians and public health officials in the field of medical informatics.   2009 marked the debut of the very successful MBLWHOI Library Summer Salon Series. The series was kicked off by MBL summer scientist Susan Barry talking about her book Fixing My Gaze which later named one of Amazon.com’s top science books for 2009. The series continued with talks by Gerald Weissmann, Cecily Selby, and Paul Colinvaux. The Rum Soaked Crooks finished off the series, reviving the songs of the MBL from the MBL Archives.  In the Bay Reading Room, an exhibit by local artist Louise Russell has been hung illustrating the scientific heritage of the horseshoe crab. The exhibit also highlights the relationship of MBL science and Limulus.  3.2 Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) open-access digitization project continues to be a focal point for the MBLWHOI Library. In the past year, the focus of the MBLWHOI Library involvement in the project has shifted from the process of digitization to organizing the information and making it discoverable. BHL continues to add partners around the world, so refining workflows and defining content has become more important as well. The American Library Association, recognizing the achievements of the BHL and the librarians who have worked together to make it happen, awarded their Outstanding Collaboration Citation to the BHL,  By mid 2010 the MBLWHOI Library had contributed over 3600 titles, 11,240 volumes, and 4,541,896 pages, to the BHL, primarily funded by a subaward from the MacArthur Foundation. Much of our day-to day BHL work and the work of all BHL Library partners is now centered on developing the BHL collection and creating tools which enable the BHL to function as an active and vibrant library. One example of this is the Gemini system which allows patrons to report problems and suggest content easily and facilitates management of this feedback across the BHL libraries.  Also during 2009-2010 MBLWHOI staff members Diane Rielinger, John Furfey, Anthony Goddard, and Matthew Person contributed to BHL meetings held in St Louis, San Francisco, Washington DC, Melbourne, Australia, and Vienna, Austria. Library Director Cathy Norton extended the global reach of BHL through meetings in Beijing with BHL-China librarians, which lead to the signing of the Chinese BHL MOU.  In June, a MOU with BHL Australia was also signed.  3.3 Woods Hole Open Access Server (WHOAS): a Digital Institutional Repository WHOAS enjoyed steady rate of growth adding 799 new metadata records and their associated digital objects between July 2009 and June 2010. In the last year there have been two releases of LigerCat (http://ligercat.ubio.org), a tool that finds journals and published articles in PubMed and produces tag clouds of Medical Subject Headings and histograms showing how the search topic has been studied over time. Improvements in infrastructure such as complete virtualization of servers have allowed us to take on larger projects including the mirroring the 65 TBs of Biodiversity Heritage Library data at MBL. We continue to make progress in information extraction from scanned library materials. Our latest tool for finding scientific names in text with errors from optical character recognition is called Neti Neti and will be released in September 2010.  A new application suite to encourage crowd sourcing, expert curation of the Biology of Aging data and provide graphical data visualization tools to help scientists use the data for discovery will be launched at the end of July.  Further support from an NIH grant to the MBL  4partnered with the American Society of Cell Biology, increased our informaticians’ staff on the exciting project of creating an image library for the cell.  Two grants from GBIF have also allowed further work on uBio to increase its efficiency.  3.5 Jewett Foundation Data Repository Grant  In the second year of the Jewett Foundation Grant the Library continued to work towards the reality of archiving the backbone data for published articles. The library worked with scientists at WHOI and MBL to determine several use cases to test the practices developed in the first year of the grant and are continuing to refine the process. A brief oral presentation at the IAMSLIC conference led to follow up collaboration with the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of UNESCO. This in turn led to a second data workshop held in Paris in April 2010, in conjunction with the International Conference on Marine Data and  Information Systems (IMDIS) meeting. Collaboration is ongoing with SCOR and IODE to address the data publication paradigm.  The Library is also embarking on an experimental project exploring ways to visually represent data. Combining aesthetic, empirical, and mathematical disciplines, data visualization harnesses multiple skill sets to add meaning and clarity to complex numerical information through graphical means. In addition to being beautiful, data visualizations are often the most effective way to communicate and analyze large, multifaceted data sets. The Library will explore data visualization in three dimensions by building a Spatial Kinetic Display that allows viewers to investigate biodiversity data.  4.0 Collections  4.1 Serials and Databases The Library continually works to evaluate the library collection, balancing new needs versus the continuity of the collection. In 2009, the library was able to expand access to the Web of Science back another ten years to 1965 expanding further the usefulness of this resource. MC-90 – Earl Hayes Papers – 1.25 lin. ft.  All of the Data Library’s previously completed finding aids were encoded into the Encoded Archival Description standard. Newly processed material is being described directly in EAD, and 136 legacy and new finding aids have been completed to this point. Since completing encoding, several modifications have been made to the files in order to provide more detailed metadata to improve an EAD search that is currently being worked on.  Over 5100 images from the Jan Hahn Photograph Collection have been scanned, uploaded to the image management system with added metadata, and are available for public viewing.  4.3 Rare Books Room and MBL Archives The Rare Book Room and MBL Archives remained quite busy, with many researchers physically and virtually visiting the collections. The Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Nobel Prize Award was repaired by the Northeast Documentation Conservation Center.  Recently donated Leuckart teaching charts were digitized and the Library exhibit “Ernst Haeckel: Art Forms in Nature” is on loan to the Science Museum Oklahoma. Thirty-seven rare books were repaired or restored, including volumes of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London and Mémoires de l’Académie Royale des Sciences de l’Institut de France.  The MBL Archives continued its support of the Embryo Project, an online portal for the history of embryology, and the Seminar in the History of Biology.    5.0 Consortia Activities  The Library continued to be involved in consortial activities that widen the scope of the library and the resources available to our researchers and also increased our buying power. These consortia include, the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), BioInformation Sciences Consortium (BISC), and the Boston Library Consortium (BLC).    6The BLC continues to be a valuable ally to the library. In 2009, the BLC undertook a strategic planning process which will help the consortium stay relevant to the libraries. Moving forward the consortium will endeavor to make greater use of the resources within the consortium, particularly recognizing the wealth of experience and knowledge. The BLC continues to digitize materials through the Internet Archive and examine the most effective ways of making this material discoverable. The Library digitized and made available via open access 465 books with the Boston Library Consortium Internet Archive Project.   6.0 Statistical Snapshot   ** Includes archival materials, books, CDs, DVDs, & videos.
