Constitutive features of childhood in Africa

Abstract

This article tries to combine the research on the history of childhood and the intercultural research on socialization. Proceeding from the thesis that childhood in Europe, characterized as a phase with specific social qualities, is a relatively modern phenomenon, peculiarities of this age are compared with those of African childhood. Analysis focuses on the presence of a pedagogical theory, general literacy, the function of shame, parental emphathy, the significance of schooling, the child\u27s exemption of daily labour, and the nuclear family with intimate interactions as condition of childhood in this sense. The results suggest that European development concerning the social phenomenon childhood took a much more radical course than the present changes in Africa. En partant de la thèse que l\u27enfance comme phase caractérisée par des qualités sociales spécifiques est un phénomène relativement moderne, elles recherchent les traits typiques de cette période de l\u27enfance africaine: L\u27existence d\u27une théorie pédagogique, d\u27une litéralité générale, de la honte, d\u27empathie parentale, la signification de l\u27école, la libération des travaux quotidiens de l\u27enfant, et le noyau familial avec ses interactions intimes comme condition préalable pour que l\u27enfance puisse se constituer.
