Access to medicines is a critical focal point when arguing in favour of the patent system and its benefits in terms of innovation, affordability and availability. The general discourse tends to concentrate within the developing and least developing world, however, studies have shown the importance in narrowing the context of discussion or analysis even if within the developing world when addressing the issue of patents and access to medicines. This article aims at analysing the relation between patents and access to medicines in general to thereafter focus in the on-going health crisis in Venezuela due to the outbreak of Dengue and Chikungunya to bring to the spotlight the other factors deterring access to medicines within this context. Extensive parts of this analysis has been already published, thus beyond presenting the reader with the Venezuelan context the goal is to highlight the need to create further incentives to foster R&D together with the need to emphasise the importance of all stakeholders to be held accountable for taking actions addressed to tackle imperative health concerns
