Isolation of Salmonella roan for the First Time in India 
Of the outbreaks of bacterial food poison-
ing, salmonellosis remains one of the major 
ones. The genus Salmonella contains more 
than 2000 serotypes and in India alone 122 
serotypes are described till now. (Saxena 
et a!., 1980). Every year new serotypes 
are. being added to the list. Isolation of a 
new serotype, Salmonella roan, for the first 
time in India is reported in this communi-
cation. This serotype has not hither:to 
been reported from any of the sources in 
this country. 
The serotype was isolated on October 19, 
1977 at Cochin from a market sample of 
frozen froglegs intended for domestic con-
sumption. The method suggested by AOAC 
(1975) was followed. Sixteen strains iso-
lated were sent to the National Salmonella 
and Escherichia Centre, Kasauli, for sera-
typing. As these strains were suspected 
to be a new serotype, they were sent by the 
National Salmonella and Escherichia Centre, 
Kasauli to the InternationAl Salmonella 
Reference Laboratory at Paris, where, they

were identified to be Salmonella roan 
(38:1v: enx). A final report on the isola-
tion of this new serotype was received m 
July, 1978. The biochemical properties of 
Salmonella roan were similar to that of 
typical Salmonella.
