Spawning Aggregations of Two Nesting Triggerfishes (Balistidae)

EXTENDED ABSTRACT 
Transient spawning aggregations are formed by species that migrate periodically from relatively distant home ranges to 
specific sites where they persist for days or weeks during a spawning cycle before returning home.  Many of these spawning 
aggregations form on a seasonal basis, with formation occurring just prior to the new moon, full moon, or both.  Most 
species spawn in pairs or groups and have pelagic gametes.  Two Indo-West Pacific triggerfish species, Balistoides 
viridescens and Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus (Balistidae), however, form spawning aggregations just prior to both new 
and full moons, and are noteworthy in that they spawn demersally with males arriving at the spawning aggregation site first 
to defend nesting sites and then attracting females to spawn in them.  Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus males build or 
maintain existing nests of rubble and sand at the spawning aggregation site, attract females to spawn at or past sunset, and 
abandon the site by the following morning.  Typically, the nests are located in sand and rubble fields of channels (e.g., 
Ulong Channel, Palau, southwest Micronesia) or on similar substrates bordering reef slopes at depths of ca. 30 m (e.g., 
Agat, Guam).  Males arrive ahead of females, usually beginning five or more days prior the new or full moon and secure, 
repair and defend (against rival males) nest sites.  As females begin to arrive at the spawning aggregation site, males 
increase their aggressive behaviors against neighboring males or other intruding species (including scuba divers), and 
engage in preliminary courtship displays towards females.  These behaviors are consistent with a lek-like mating system, 
with the exception of male defense of a tangible resource (the nest).  At Orote Point, Guam, Balistoides viridescens males 
defend holes or small fissures in the pavement that are used as nests, attract females to spawn, and engage in post-spawning 
defense of the nest until the day of the new or full moon before they appear to abandon the nest by the following day.  Both 
males and females remain at the spawning aggregation site afterwards, however, and engage in limited feeding and social 
interactions that include “parading” by groups of males and females in the water column, as well as slowly-executed non-
aggressive intra-and intersexual displays between individuals.  Post-spawning defense of the nest site as the next moon 
phase (third or first quarter) approaches has not been observed, however.  As dusk approaches each night that this species is 
resident on the spawning aggregation site, individuals seek shelter in holes located mainly in the lower spur and groove or 
upper bench of the reef (ca. 2-6m depths).  Holes typically accommodate a single individual but some holes have been 
found that accommodate two fish.  This species also displays elements of lek-like behavior in its mating system but like P. 
flavimarginatus is not a true lekking species.  Currently, individuals of both species are being collected on Guam and tagged 
with internal acoustic biotelemetry transmitters in an attempt to determine catchment areas and temporal-spatial movement 
patterns between home range and spawning aggregation sites.

Las agregaciones de desove transitorias son formadas por las especies que emigran periódicamente de gamas caseras 
relativamente distantes a los sitios especifícíos en donde persisten por días o las semanas durante un desove completan un 
ciclo antes de volver a casa.  Muchos de éstos que desoven agregaciones forman sobre una base estacional, con la formación 
ocurriendo apenas antes de la luna nueva, de las Luna Llena, o de ambas.  La mayoría de las especies disoven en pares o los 
grupos y tienen gametes pelágicos.  Dos especies del triggerfish del Indo-oeste, Balistoides viridescens y Pseudobalistes 
flavimarginatus (Balistidae), sin embargo, forman agregacionesde desove apenas antes de las Luna Llena nuevas y, y son 
signifícativos en que desoven demersally con los varones que llegan el sitio de desove de la agregación primero para 
defender sitios de nesting de los varones rivales y después para atraer a hembras a la desove dentro de las jerarquías.  Los 
varones de Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus construyen o mantienen jerarquís esistentes del escombro y de la arena en el 
sitio de desove de la agregación, atraen a hembras a la desove en o más allá de la puesta del sol, y abandonan el sitio por la 
mañana siguiente.  Los varones de los Balistoides viridescens defíenden los agujeros en el pavimento que se utilizan como 
jerarquías, atraen a hembras a la desove, y enganchan a la defensa de poste-desove limitada de la jerarquía hasta el día de la 
Luna Llena nueva o y después abandonan la jerarquía por el día siguiente.  Ambos dlementos gráficos de la especie lek-
como del comportamiento en sus sistemas de acoplamiento pero no son especies lekking veraderas.

Agregation de Fecondation de Deux Nidifications de Balistidés (Balistidae) 
 
Les agrégations de fécondation transitoires sont formées par les espèces qui émigrent périodiquement des classes de 
famille relativement lointaines aux sites spécifiques, où ils persistent pendant des jours ou des semaines lors d'un cycle de 
fécondation avant le retour à la maison. Beaucoup de ces agrégations de fécondation se forment sur une base saisonnière, 
avec une formation se produisant juste avant la nouvelle lune, la pleine lune, ou tous les deux. La plupart des espèces fraient 
en paires ou groupes et ont des gamètes pélagiques. Deux espèces de balistes  de l'ouest du Pacifique-Indien, Balistoides 
viridescens et Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus (Balistidae), cependant, forment des agrégations de fécondation juste avant 
les nouvelles et pleines lunes et sont remarquables parce qu'ils fraient de façon démersale avec les mâles arrivant sur le site 
d'agrégation de fécondation d'abord pour défendre des sites de nidification des mâles rivaux et ensuite attirer des femelles 
pour frayer dans les nids. Les mâles Pseudobalistes flavimarginatus construisent ou maintiennent des nids existants de 
décombres et de sable au site d'agrégation de fécondation, attirent des femelles pour frayer au ou après le coucher du soleil 
et abandonnent le site avant le matin suivant. Les mâles Balistoides viridescens défendent des trous dans le trottoir qui sont 
utilisés comme nids, attirent des femelles pour frayer et s'engagent dans une défense post-frai limitée du nid jusqu'au jour de 
la nouvelle ou pleine lune et ensuite abandonnent le nid avant le jour suivant. Les deux espèces affichent des éléments de 
comportement lek-like dans leurs systèmes d'accouplement, mais ne sont pas de vraies espèces lekking.
