KOMPETENSI KOMUNIKASI ANTARBUDAYA DIANTARA SISWA DI SMA SPINS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL SURABAYA

Abstract

This research describes about the intercultural communication competence among students in high school of Spins International School Surabaya. This research uses a model of intercultural communication competence by Spitzberg, consisting of components of intercultural communication competence there are motivation, knowledge, and skill or ability. This research uses the case study method, and data collection research using indepth interviews, observation, and documentation study. The results of this research indicate that students in high school of Spins International School Surabaya have motivation to do intercultural communication, the general motivation is to make friendship. The students also have knowledge about personal information and cultural information of people whose communicate with them. Generally, their cultural knowledge is knowledge about Indonesian culture. Whereas for the skill or ability of intercultural communication competence, is highly dependent on common language while communicate, that is English. Moreover, that skill also includes behavioral quiescence while doing intercultural communication and tolerance capabilities and respect for cultural differences.
