Intermodal transport is defined as the carriage of goods by at least two different modes of transport in the same loading unit (Intermodal Transport Unit) without stuffing or stripping operations when changing modes. The major part of the journey is done by rail, inland waterway or sea, and any initial and/or final legs carried out by road are as short as possible. Hence, intermodal transportation is characterized by the combination of the advantages of rail and road, rail for long distances, and road for the initial and the final leg. This paper deals with the problem of optimally locating multimodal terminals for freight transportation in Serbia. It suggests methodology for the transport flows analysis, and modeling approach, and illustrates its operationality for bimodal, and three modal terminals locating In Serbia.
