The question of human uniqueness in the teaching underlying images of human evolution

Abstract

Este artigo avalia várias hipóteses propostas para explicar a singularidade humana. Defende-se que esse tópico possui um valor pedagógico estratégico para o ensino médio, porquanto fortalece os elos entre as ciências naturais e as ciências sociais, evitando que sejam vistas como distantes em seus interesses e, mesmo, antagônicas em seus métodos e valores. Entretanto, os manuais de biologia aqui analisados, quando expõem a evolução do homem, restringem-se, quase que exclusivamente, aosseus aspectos morfológicos e fisiológicos, deixando de lado os aspectos psicológicos e culturais desse processo complexo. Argumenta-se que esses últimos aspectos são, precisamente, os que permitem integrar, no tratamento da evolução humana, aquelas grandes áreas e, de modo especial, a biologia e a antropologia. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis paper appraises various hypotheses proposed to account for human singularity. It is argued that this topic has a strategic pedagogical importance in high school since it strengthens the ties between the natural sciences and the social sciences, counteracting the tendency to see these areas as distant from each other in their research interests and, even, antagonic in their methods and values. Nonetheless, when human evolution is dealt with in the texts we analyze here, the discussions are usually restricted to the morphological and physiological aspects, leaving aside the psychological and cultural aspects of this complex process. The latter aspects are precisely the ones that convey an integration of those great areas and, especially, between biology and anthropology
