IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILLS OF GRADE VIII STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 KALIGONDANG, PURBALINGGA, THROUGH THE USE OF MOVIE CLIPS

Abstract

This research was an action research study that aimed to improve the speaking skills of Grade VIII A students of SMPN 1 Kaligondang in the academic year 2014/2015. The actions were implemented in two cycles and collaborate with the English teacher. The data were in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained through observations, interviews, and documents. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected through speaking tests. The results of this research showed that the use of movie clips combined with speaking activities was proven to be effective to improve the students’ speaking skills. The students got appropriate models of speaking English and also had adequate opportunities to practice speaking in order to speak fluently and confidently. Their speaking mean score increased from 54.4 to 69.7
