Abstract

In relation to the implementation of Local Leader Election in Surakarta City in 2015, KPU (General Election Commission) of Surakarta City needs local mass media help to implement the activity of spreading information, general election socialization and electorate’s education. Mass media has the power to reach the electorate community in Surakarta City, consisting of 399,915 persons. This research aimed to describe the media relations activity in KPU of Surakarta City particularly related to the implementation of Local Leader Election in Surakarta City in 2015. The research method used descriptive qualitative which mean that the author described all of media relations activity and strategy used, based on the fact and data collected through observation, in-depth interview and document study. Data analysis in this research used Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. From the result of research, it could be found that the media relations strategy applied in KPU of Surakarta City included: (1) fact finding, (2) planning, (3) implementation, and (4) evaluation. The conclusion of research was that generally, the media relations activity in KPU of Surakarta city had been consistent with the concept suggested by public relations practitioners. However, there were still some weaknesses to be improved, for example, in relation to the writing of press release less consistent with the press release writing rule
