Flood water cancontain raw sewage, viruses, bacteria, andpesticides.It is important to take the following stepswhen working in flood damaged areas:• Check to make sure that tetanus shotsare up-to-date. (Get a booster shot if youhave not had a tetanus shot within thepast 10 years. Some health departmentsrecommend a booster within five years ifyou are working in flood water.)• Wear waterproof boots, preferably highrubber boots.Kansas State University • Cooperative Extension Service • Manhattan, Kansas• Wear waterproof gloves—latex or neo-prene coated, not leather or cotton(kitchen rubber/latex gloves will work).• Wear a face mask.• Avoid direct contact with water• Wash with an anti-bacterial soap (Dial,for example) after working in flood areas• Wash clothing in a detergent and disin-fectant after working in flood areas.(Follow the manufacturer’s instructions).Artyce Hedrick, Extension Specialist, ClothingOutdated Publication, for historical use.
