Answer FIVE (5) questions only. Marks will be given to the FIRST FIVE (5) questions put in order on the answer script and NOT the BEST FIVE (5).  Kertas ini mengandungi ENAM (6) soalan. (a) Describe the standard compaction test normally carried out in the laboratory to determine the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of the soil.    Huraikan kaedah pemadatan piawai yang selalunya dijalankan di makmal untuk menentukan nilai ketumpatan kering maksima dan kandungan air optima untuk sesuatu jenis tanah. (5 marks)  (b) Describe the sand replacement technique used on site to determine the relative density of the compacted soil.   Huraikan kaedah penggantian pasir yang digunakan di tapak bina untuk menentukan katumpatan relatif tanah yang di padat (5 marks)   (c) Describe the factors affecting the compaction processes. Use diagrams and sketches to support your answer.  Jelaskan faktor-faktor yang akan mempengaruhi proses pemadatan tanah. Gunakan rajah dan lakaran untuk menyokong jawapan anda. (5 marks)   (d) During a field test to determine a relative density of compacted soil, a total of 1210 cm 3 of soil was found to be replaced by a standard sand. The weight of the moist and dry soil were 2305 gm and 1905 gm respectively. If the maximum dry density of the soil is 1.82 Mg/m 3 what will be the relative density of the soil.  Semasa ujian di tapak dijalankan untuk menentukan ketumpatan relatif tanah yang dipadat, sebanyak 1210 cm3 tanah didapati telah digantikan oleh pasir piawai. Berat tanah basah dan kering adalah 2305 gm dan 1905 gm masing-masing. Sekiranya nilai ketumpatan kering maksima tanah ini di makmal adalah 1.82 Mg/m3, apakah nilai pemadatan relatif untuk tanah ini.   (5 marks)   2. (a) Starting from a phase diagram and the other basic theory of the consolidation, define the relationship between the consolidation settlement with the other basic parameters.  Bermula dari gambarajah fasa tanah dan teori asas proses pengukuhan tanah, berikan perhubungan antara pengenapan pengukuhan dengan parameter asas pengukuhan yang lain.   (5 marks)         …3/-  - 3 -               [EAG 245E/3]    (b) The following results were obtained from a set of consolidation test on a specimen of a clay sample taken from a 4 m thick clay layer on one construction site which are overlaid and underlaid by a thick layer of coarse sand.  Data di bawah diperolehi dari sat set ujian pengukuhan di makmal ke atas satu spesimen tanah lempung yang diambil dari satu lapisan tanah lempung di suatu tapak bina setebal 4 m. Tanah lempung tersebut dilapisi oleh lapisan pasir kasar yang tebal di bahagian atas dan bawah. The sample take 5 minutes to achieve 35 % of consolidation.  Tebal asal spesimen adalah 19.2 mm dan kandungan lembapan sebesar 21 %. Sampel ini mengambil masa  5 minit untuk mencapai  35 % pengukuhan.  i. Estimate the total consolidation settlement of the clay layer.    Anggarkan jumlah pengenapan pengukuhan yang akan berlaku ke atas lapisan tanah lempung di tapak bina di atas perubahan tegasan di atas.   (5 marks) ii. Estimate the time to achieve 30 %, 50 % and 90 % consolidation.   Anggarkan masa untuk mencapai 30 %, 50 % and 90 % pengukuhan.  (5 marks)  iii. Suggest a method to accelerate the consolidation process of the above clay layer.  Used sketches to support your answers.      Cadangkan satu kaedah untuk mempercepatkan proses pengukuhan di atas. (a) Berikan definasi tegasan berkesan dan tekanan air liang. (4 marks)  (b) A layer of sand with 6.0 m thick overlies a layer of clay with 3.0 m thick. The water table is 2.0 m below the surface of sand layer. The saturated unit weights of sand and clay are 20 kN/m3 and 19 kN/m3 respectively.  And above the water table, the unit weight of sand is 17 kN/m3.  Draw the pressure distribution diagrams for total vertical stress and effective vertical stress.  If sand is saturated with capillary water to a height of 1.0 m above the water table, how will the total vertical stress and effective vertical stress be affected?  (b) Satu lapisan pasir dengan ketebalan 6.0 m terletak di atas satu lapisan tanah liat dengan ketebalan 3.0 m.  Aras air bumi berada 2.0 m di bawah permukaan lapisan pasir.  Berat unit tepu pasir dan tanah liat adalah 20 kN/m3 dan 19 kN/m3 masing-masing.  Di atas aras air bumi, berat unit pasir adalah 17 kN/m3.  Lakarkan agihan tekanan untuk jumlah tekanan dan tegasan berkesan.  Sekiranya pasir dipenuhi dengan air kapilari setinggi 1.0 m ke atas dari aras air bumi, apakah kesannya ke atas jumlah tekanan dan tegasan berkesan? The unit weight of the fill material is 18 kN/m3.  The saturated unit weight of sand and clay are 20 kN/m3 and 19.5 kN/m3 respectively. The water table is at the surface of the original soil as shown in Figure 1.0 and the permeability of the clay is very low.  Calculate the total and effective vertical stress at Point A and Point B for the following conditions:  i. Before placing the fill. ii. Immediately after the fill has been placed. iii. Many years after the fill has been placed.  Tanah tambak setinggi 4.0 m diletakkan secara extensif merentasi permukaan tanah asal. Berat unit tanah tambak adalah 18 kN/m3. Berat unit tepu untuk pasir dan tanah liat adalah 20 kN/m3 dan 19.5 kN/m3 masing-masing. (8 marks)  4. (a) Explain the meaning of flow nets.   (a) Terangkan maksud jaringan aliran.    (4 marks)  (b) The section through a dam is shown in Figure 2.0.  Draw the flow net under the dam. If the coefficient of permeability of the soil is 1.5  10–3 mm/s, determine the quantity of seepage per meter of dam under the dam and plot the distribution of uplift pressure on the base of the dam.   (b) Satu keratan merentasi empangan ditunjukkan dalam Rajah 2.0.  Lukiskan jaringan aliran untuk empangan tersebut.  Sekiranya pekali kebolehtelapan tanah ialah 1.5  10–3 mm/s, tentukan kuantiti resipan air di bawah empangan per m panjang empangan dan plotkan agihan tekanan air yang bertindak sepanjang dasar empangan. If the same sheet pile walls are to be installed at both sides of the dam, how will the seepage under the dam be affected?  (c) Berdasarkan kepada soalan (b), sekiranya satu cerucuk keping ingin dipasang pada bahagian hulu empangan sedalam 9.0 m seperti yang ditunjukkan dalam Rajah 3.0 untuk mengurangkan kehilangan air, tentukan kuantiti air yang hilang menerusi resipan.  Sekiranya cerucuk keping dipasang pada kedua-dua bahagian empangan, apakah kesannya ke atas kuantiti resipan air di bawah empangan? Sketch the mineral in simple form and explain briefly the THREE (3) clay structure from the combination.  (a) Beri dua nama unit mineralogi lempung yang biasa diperolehi dan pembentukannya Lakarkan mineral tersebut dalam bentuk mudah dan terangkan TIGA (3) jenis pembetukan mineral tersebut secara ringkas.  (5 marks)  (b) The Atterberg’s limits of soil are LL = 60%, PL = 26% and the soil contains 40% by mass of solids in clay range of the particles size. If the natural water content of the soil is 62.4%, calculate its :   i. Plasticity Index,  ii. Activity and  iii. Liquidity Index.
