Pollen of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and white poplar (P. alba L.) was treated with infrared heat at 50°C for 0 to 5 minutes, then used to pollinate receptive female flowers of quaking aspen. From the P. tremuloides X tremuloides cross, four haploid diploid mixaploids, but no entirely haploid plants, were recovered from among 2-month-old seedlings. The recovery of spindly, diploid aberrants in both crosses, as well as three glaucous diploids from the P. tremuloides X alba cross, indicates that spontaneous diploidization occurred in maternal haploids. A simple oven is described for weakening pollen
