Abstract
Nestes casos, a criatividade do tradutor
segunda parte do trabalho.
A parte prática deste projecto consistirá na análise de estratégias de tradução
de fraseologismos presentes (a) em duas traduções alemãs de Mia Couto, A Varanda
do Frangipani (Unter dem Frangipanibaum) e Terra Sonâmbula (Das
Schlafwandelnde Land), obras traduzidas por Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, (b) e
numa peça de teatro de Bertolt Brecht, Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder, traduzida por
Ilse Losa: Ti Coragem e os seus filhos.
Através dos exemplos recolhidos vamos poder observar duas abordagens
distintas de tradução de construções fraseológicas e a forma como a criatividade da
tradutora tem um papel fundamental na tradução das obras de Mia Couto. The purpose of this work is to explore the theory and practice related to the
translation of phraseological expressions, in other words, the set structures of a
language with a specific meaning.
Phraseological units, in addition to other mechanisms, have a key role in the
creativity of the speaker, as well as in the creation of new metaphors and realities.
However, there is still no consensual definition of concepts such as "phraseology" or
"phraseological construction". Therefore, a universal theory related to the translation
of these units still doesn’t exist either. That is the reason why the translation of set
phrases is considered a very complex subject and a field which is particularly difficult
to the translator, since it is necessary to understand the difference between the several
phraseological units in order to establish the translation strategy to be adopted.
Besides, in most cases, the meaning of these units cannot be decoded from their
individual elements, but only from its whole set, and a big part of these constructions
are also very specific of a language and culture. So, in the majority of instances, the
equivalent set phrase does not exist in the target language and a literal translation
wouldn't make sense either. In these cases, the translator's creativity turns out to be a
very useful tool to overcome several barriers that the translation of set phrases
presents us, especially when the author of the original work changes set phrases, too.
The main theoretical issues related to the translation of set phrases and some
particular features of phraseological units will be reviewed in the first part of this
work. The existing terminology problems will be approached as well, and a
connection between the translation of phraseological units and cognitive linguistics
will be established. The main groups of phraseological constructions that will be
analyzed are the idiomatic expressions and proverbs (which will be considered here as
a part of phraseology instead of an isolated field). Some translation strategies of
phraseological constructions will be presented too and analyzed in the second part of
the paper.
The practical part of this project will consist of the analysis of translation
strategies of phrasemes (a) in two German translations of Mia Couto, A Varanda do
Frangipani (Unter dem Frangipanibaum) and Terra Sonâmbula (Das
Schlafwandelnde Land), translated by Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, and (b) a
theater play by Bertolt Brecht, Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder translated by Ilse
Losa: Ti Coragem e os seus filhos.
Through the gathered examples, we will be able to perceive two different
approaches of phraseological constructions’ translation, as well as the way the
creativity of the translator influences the translation of Mia Couto's works
