Comparison between two adjacent experimental torrential watersheds: Kuzlovec and Mačkov graben

Abstract

Experimental watersheds, which are frequent around the world, are important for improving our hydrological knowledge. Different hydrological processes such as precipitation, surface runoff, suspended sediment transport, erosion processes, are usually observed in the experimental watersheds. This paper presents some measuring equipment used in two experimental watersheds, namely Kuzlovec and Mačkov graben. Both catchments are part of the Gradaščica river basin, which drains into the Ljubljanica river that is part of the Sava river basin. Some preliminary analysis results are also presented. One of the main conclusions was that the suspended sediment concentration peak occurs on average before the peak discharge, which is often the case for small watersheds. Here sediment sources are located near the channels or in the channel itself. Furthermore, significant precipitation events have a large influence on the suspended sediment concentrations. Measurements with precise time step on both experimental watersheds will continue in the future. Measured data will be used as a basis for upgrading the knowledge about hydrological processes
