Introduction: Depressive disorder is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses which characterized by depressed mood and feeling, low self esteem and lack of interest or pleasure in each type daily activities. Depression often causes people to abandon activities, and consume some drugs that treat mental illness and can take obesity. The other hand, obesity causes disgrace and ridicule and fat people are often subjected to harassment and other abusive behavior. Given the above, we intended to design this study to seek the relationship between obesity and depression among people.
Material and Method: There is a descriptive, analytical and cross-sectional study and carried out on 200 persons who have no mental illness. Patients information were entered in to check lists that consist of demographic and anthropometric data, blood pressure, diabetes back ground, education level and etc. given a questionnaire to each person and scoring persons and according it we find the existence of depression in them. After completing the check lists and entering resulted scores from questionnaire to check lists, resulted information were entered in to SPSS software.
Results: In this study 200 patients were enrolled that among them 100 patients had BMI above 30 and 100 patients had BMI less than 25. In this study 57% of patients were men and 43% were women and the age average of them was 33.36± 11.09 years. Majority of them had diploma. In this study 10 persons were with diabetes (2 persons of low BMI group and 8 persons of high BMI group) and 27 persons (6 persons of low BMI group and 21 persons of high BMI group) were with hyper tension that there were observed a significant relationship between diabetes and hyper tension with BMI. The average of BMI in high and low BMI group was 32.93 and 23.20 respectively. Analyzed data were observed direct relationship between BMI and incidence of depression, but there is no relationship between gender and age of studied persons and onset of depression.
Conclusion: In current study were observed obesity have a strong relationship with depression in people however these individuals had no back ground of depression and use of antidepressants, so may be concluded that obesity causes depression in them
