Annals 439BYZANTINE STUDIES IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAMThe Committee for Byzantine Studies in the University of Birmingham has been concerned with the extension of teaching and research facilities in the subject for some years. For example almost all medieval and modern lan­guages which research students in Byzantine Studies require are taught and Library holdings (which include 87 periodicals relevant to the subject) have been substantially strengthened. The forthcoming number of the Birmingham Historical Journal will be devoted to Byzantine questions.As part of its programme the Committee arranges a seminar course on a Byzantine or post-Byzantine topic each spring. In 1969 the topic was “The Tourkokratia.” Papers were presented on “Patriarchate and Phanar” (Sir Steven Runciman); “Late Byzantine concepts of Hellenism” (Professor Robert Browning); “The Cretan Renaissance” (Mr Alfred Vincent); “The Greeks of Anatolia, 1750-1860” (Dr Anthony Bryer); “Enlightenment and Reaction in the Greek World, 1750-1821” (Mr Richard Clogg); “The Greek Church re-emerges” (Professor Joseph Gill, S.J.); “1821” (Mr. S. J. Papastavrou) and “Palamas and the New Hellenism” (Professor George Thomson). Most of these papers, with others, will be published shortly.The seminar course for 1970 will be on “The Roman Empire in the East: Constantine to Justinian” and will be held over two weekends on 16-17 Janu­ary. The first weekend will be concerned with “History and Society,” and there will be papers on “Social and economic problems” (Professor A. H. M. Jones); Monetary crisis and recovery” (Mr P. Grierson); “The eastern limes” (Мг E. W. Gray); “Lycaonia and Isauria” (Dr M. H.Ballance); “Lycia and Pamphy- lia” (Dr S. Jameson); “Africa and Cyrenaica” (Lady Brogan) and “The Da- nubian provinces” (Dr J.J.Wilkes).The second weekend will be concerned with “Learning and the Arts,” and there will be papers on “Libanius and the City of Antioch” (Professor A.F.Norman); “The Alexandrian Church” (Professor H. Chadwick); “Art and Architecture” (Professor R. K.Waterhouse); “Language and Literature” (Professor R.Browning); “The transmission of classical texts” (Professor E.G.
