There is interest in adopting OER due to  the current textbook being expensive and the instructor will adopt or adapt open materials  based on what is available.  Current textbooks and materials  Kathryn L. McCance and Sue E. Huether, Pathophysiology, 8th Edition (Elsevier Mosby) ISBN:  9780323583473   $139.00  Search Notes  The search consulted OER Commons, Merlot, Open Textbook Library, and OpenStax. There were  few pathophysiology open education materials compared to typical results for medical OER  searches. The majority of materials are course recordings, slides, and lecture notes.  Additionally, there were a number of disease specific OER discovered during the search that may  be useful for the course.  Gap Analysis  There are many OER dedicated to medical studies, but very few specific to pathophysiology. Additionally, there are existing physiology and pathology texts that could  be adapted to form suitable material for the course. However, most of the resources are geared  toward undergraduate education and embracing OER for pathophysiology courses will likely  require adaption and creation work. There is a need to create a pathophysiology OER textbook. The text was designed to equip future nurses with  advanced knowledge of pathophysiology for common diseases and disorders that they  may encounter in primary care.  Principle and Practice of Human Pathology  ●  Principle and Practice of Human Pathology, MIT Open Courseware, MIT (2003).  ●  Available from  MIT Open Courseware  ●  Online course  ●  License: varies  ●  Comments: This open course is available publicly for students to take at pace or the  material to be used as supplemental material for other courses. The course provides the  syllabus, course readings, lecture notes, labs, and assignments, which all may be used  as is or be adapted to fit the course context. The homework assignments and labs may  be the most useful and easiest to adapt for course use.  Relevant Learning Modules in Toxicology  ●  Greg Nagy, Relevant Learning Modules in Toxicology: Pathophysiology, ToxMSDT (2021).  ●  Available from  OER Commons  and  ToxMSDT  ●  Online  ●  License: CC BY-NC  ●  Comments: The ToxMSDT program  provides six case studies designed primarily for  toxicology students and professionals. The topics covered included, an introduction to  toxicology, exposure standards and guidelines, toxic effects, and biotransformation. The  learning modules will not likely all be the exact fit for this course context, but the  materials can be re-mixed and re-used to fit the course context. The most ideal module  is  Pathophysiology  and contains 13 lessons.  Stretch Resource Options  Pathophysiology of the Digestive System  ●  Laura Austgen, R.A. Bowen and Melissa Rouge, Pathophysiology of the Digestive  System, Colorado State University (2019).  ●  Available from  Merlot  ●  Website  ●  License: Unlisted  ●  Comments: This site covers aspects of the physiology and anatomy of the digestive  system as well as control of digestive system functioning. The voyage through the  digestive tract gives detailed information gross and microscopic anatomy of each part  of the system as well as motility, transport across the epithelium, secretions, and  absorption of various nutrients. There is also a glossary available and self evaluations  are available throughout the site for use. This may be appropriate for student  assignments and self testing, or may be adapted if licensing is cleared with the resource  authors.  Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology  ●  Anna Chruscik et al., Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology - Australian Edition,  University of Southern Queensland (2021).  ●  Available from  Open Textbook Library  ●  Onelin, book, PDF, XML, ODF  ●  License: CC BY-SA  ●  Comments: This OER textbook was adapted from the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology  to fit an Australian context. It is aimed at supporting first year anatomy and physiology  courses. The material will likely not be advanced enough for this course, but some of the  material may be useful for adaption purposes.  Anatomy and Physiology  ●  Betts et al., Anatomy and Physiology, OpenStax (2013).  ●  Available from  OpenStax  ●  PDF, Online book, iBook, physical copy  ●  CC BY  ●  Comments: Anatomy and Physiology was created for two-semester human anatomy and  physiology courses. The book is organized by body system and covers standard scope  and sequence requirements. The text , strategically constructed art, career features, and  links to external learning tools address the critical teaching and learning challenges in  the course. The web-based version of Anatomy and Physiology also features links to  surgical videos, histology, and interactive diagrams.  Diabetes Mellitus Pathophysiology  ●  Diabetes Mellitus Pathophysiology Type 1 & 2  ●  Available from  Merlot  ●  Presentation, YouTube video  ●  License: unknown  ●  Comments: Diabetes mellitus pathophysiology and nursing nclex lecture review on  diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. The instructor highlight the key players in diabetes  mellitus, causes, different types of diabetes (type 1, type 2, and gestational),  complications, and nursing assessment of the diabetic patient. This resource may not be  a good fit for the course if the instructor doesn’t want to supply other instructor videos  Pathophysiology of Heart Failure  ●  Chanteuse Sanders, Pathophysiology of Heart Failure (2009).  ●  Available from  Merlot  ●  Video  ●  License: Unlisted  ●  Comments: This is a short video designed for university-level students and describes the  pathophysiology of heart failure and how it will progress if left untreated. This is one  example of many pathophysiology resources in Merlot that are useful for supplemental  materials in courses, such as for use in assignments or in the classroom for students to  view.
