 have	  achieved	  gender	  equity,	  and	  that	  the	  need	  for	  feminism	  is	  a	  thing	  of	  the	  past.	  Through	  my	  CURF	  summer	  research	  posi@on	  I	  explored	  the	  issue	  in	  various	  dimensions	  by	  delving	  into	  the	  Penn	  Women’s	  Center	  archives,	  aHending	  the	  Na@onal	  Council	  For	  Research	  on	  Women’s	  annual	  conference,	  and	  gathering	  informa@on	  for	  a	  PowerPoint	  en@tled	  “Does	  Penn	  Need	  a	  Women’s	  Center?”	  	  By	  looking	  into	  the	  history	  of	  the	  Women’s	  Center	  and	  immersing	  myself	  in	  the	  environment	  of	  the	  1970s,	  80s,	  and	  90s,	  I	  was	  able	  to	  see	  how	  far	  women’s	  rights	  have	  come	  since	  my	  mother	  was	  the	  age	  that	  I	  am	  now.	  However,	  it	  is	  clear	  that	  gender	  equity	  is	  something	  that	  we	  have	  not	  yet	  aHained,	  despite	  the	  progress	  that	  has	  been	  made.	  Women	  may	  make	  up	  50%	  of	  degree	  earners	  but	  they’re	  only	  28%	  of	  full	  professors	  na@onwide,	  3.8%	  of	  Fortune	  500	  CEOs,	  and	  16.8%	  of	  Congress.	  However,	  they	  are	  92%	  of	  plas@c	  surgery	  recipients,	  90%	  of	  rape	  vic@ms,	  and	  85%	  of	  domes@c	  violence	  vic@ms.	  As	  these	  sta@s@cs	  and	  the	  surrounding	  graphics	  suggest,	  feminism	  is	  just	  as	  relevant	  as	  it	  has	  ever	  been.	  	  	  	  The	  federal	  minimum	  wage	  is	  currently	  $7.25/hr.	  If	  it	  had	  risen	  with	  inﬂa@on	  since	  1968,	  it	  would	  now	  be	  more	  than	  $10.50/hr.	  Almost	  two	  thirds	  of	  minimum	  wage	  	  	  	  	  	  workers	  are	  female.	  Twice	  as	  many	  American	  woman	  over	  65	  as	  men	  live	  in	  poverty.	  50%	  of	  ALL	  American	  women	  over	  age	  65	  would	  be	  living	  in	  poverty	  if	  not	  for	  Social	  Security.	  	  The	  average	  American	  woman	  makes	  78.7¢	  on	  the	  white	  American	  man’s	  dollar.	  However,	  this	  ﬁgure	  is	  misleading	  because	  it	  does	  not	  take	  race	  into	  account.	  White	  women	  make	  80.5¢	  on	  the	  white	  man’s	  dollar,	  African	  American	  women	  make	  69.6¢,	  and	  La@na	  women	  make	  59.8¢.	  	  	  (African	  American	  and	  La@no	  men	  also	  make	  	  	  	  	  less	  than	  white	  men,	  but	  Asian	  men	  make	  slightly	  more)	  	  1	  out	  of	  every	  6	  women	  will	  be	  a	  vic@m	  of	  rape	  or	  aHempted	  rape	  in	  her	  life@me.	  There	  is	  a	  2/3	  chance	  that	  she	  will	  know	  her	  aHacker.	  	  American	  women	  are	  more	  likely	  to	  be	  murdered	  by	  a	  current	  or	  former	  roman@c	  partner	  than	  by	  any	  other	  perpetrator.	  This	  is	  not	  the	  case	  for	  American	  men.	  	  	  	  An	  es@mated	  25%	  of	  women	  will	  be	  abused	  by	  a	  roman@c	  partner	  at	  some	  point	  during	  their	  lives.	  Women	  age	  20-­‐24	  are	  the	  most	  likely	  to	  experience	  nonfatal	  rela@onship	  abuse.	  	  27.3%	  of	  PA	  ins@tu@ons	  of	  higher	  educa@on	  are	  headed	  by	  women	  –	  	  higher	  than	  the	  na@onal	  average.	  	  	  PA	  ranks	  42nd	  in	  the	  na@on	  for	  its	  propor@on	  of	  female	  state	  legislators.	  PA	  law	  requires	  women	  to	  wait	  24	  hours	  before	  receiving	  an	  abor@on.	  It	  also	  mandates	  that	  women	  are	  informed	  about	  “the	  possible	  detrimental	  chological	  eﬀects	  of	  an	  abor@on”	  even	  though	  the	  American	  Psychological	  Associa@on	  has	  stated	  that	  there	  is	  no	  	  scien@ﬁc	  evidence	  to	  support	  this	  claim.	  	  	  82%	  of	  Pennsylvania	  coun@es	  lack	  an	  abor@on	  provider.	  	  The	  Aﬀordable	  Care	  Act	  requires	  insurers	  to	  cover	  women’s	  gynecology	  visits,	  birth	  control,	  well-­‐baby	  care	  and	  more	  without	  charging	  copays.	  	  Many	  countries,	  including	  Pakistan,	  Moldova,	  &	  Croa@a	  provide	  paid	  maternity	  leave.	  Liberia,	  Swaziland,	  &	  the	  United	  States	  are	  among	  the	  only	  na@ons	  that	  do	  not.	  The	  USA	  is	  far	  behind	  its	  peers	  in	  this	  regard.	  	  Since	  2010’s	  midterm	  elec@ons,	  there	  has	  been	  a	  huge	  	  spike	  in	  state	  laws	  limi@ng	  access	  to	  legal	  abor@on.	  	  These	  ranged	  from	  the	  defunding	  of	  reproduc@ve	  health	  clinics	  like	  Planned	  Parenthood,	  to	  mandatory	  biased	  counseling,	  to	  outright	  bans	  on	  abor@ons	  amer	  20	  weeks	  –	  without	  an	  excep@on	  for	  the	  mother’s	  health,	  or	  for	  vic@ms	  of	  rape	  or	  incest	  	  –	  a	  direct	  aHack	  on	  Roe	  v.	  Wade.	  	  Penn’s	  undergraduate	  student	  body	  is	  53%	  female	  	  Penn	  ranks	  2nd	  among	  its	  peer	  ins@tu@ons	  for	  percentage	  of	  female	  assistant	  professors	  	  17.5%	  of	  Penn’s	  full	  professors	  are	  female	  –	  signiﬁcantly	  lower	  than	  the	  na@onal	  average.	  	  Penn	  has	  had	  only	  7	  female	  commencement	  speakers	  in	  the	  past	  40	  years…	  and	  just	  1	  in	  the	  past	  15.	  Addi@onally,	  in	  the	  past	  12	  years	  women	  have	  composed	  a	  mere	  26%	  of	  SPEC	  Connaissance	  speakers.	  NARAL	  Penn	  Gender	  Equity	  Report	   Penn	  Gender	  Equity	  Report	  	  Penn	  Archives	  &	  OSA	  22%	  of	  all	  federal	  judges	  are	  female.	  	  Three	  of	  the	  past	  four	  Secretaries	  of	  State	  have	  been	  female:	  Madeleine	  Albright,	  Condoleezza	  Rice,	  and	  Hillary	  Clinton.	  Only	  20%	  of	  the	  90	  women	  serving	  in By	  looking	  into	  the	  history	  of	  the	  Women’s	  Center	  and	  immersing	  myself	  in	  the
