The Performance Practice Institute (PPI) at the Caine College of the Arts embodies a project-based approach to the study of the history of performance, which enriches the intellectual and artistic life of the students involved while making accessible to Utah audiences exciting concerts of lesser known repertoires, especially chose from the pre-1750 period. The family's work has been honored with three "Citations of Excellence in the Art of Puppetr y" from che American chapter of Union International de la Marionette (UNIMA). In 200 I , the family ensemble began a decade of producing marionette operas. In June of 2006 , rhc Ca rrer Family production of Franz Joseph Ha ydn's The Burning Hou se played co sold out crowds at Musikfescspiele Potsdam Sanssouci receiving praises from Potsd am and Berlin critics. Dmitri has also participated in numerous collaborative production s inclu ding a warer puppetry spectacle with Chinese master puppeteer Yang Feng, adapta tions of No rrhwest Coast legends shared by Elders of the Makah Tribe, and the Kenned y Center com missioned production of Cathay- 3 Tales of China. Alon g with performing, Dmitri has been involved with researching and document ing p uppet ry trad itions. In 2003 , UNIMA presented him with an Internacional Scholar ship Award co srndy the marionettes in Quanzhou, China under the acclaimed master Huan g Yi Que. In 2005 , he compl eted a survey of pupp ets for the MI T based Museum Loan N etwork, a national initiativ e established and funded by I he Pew Charit able Trusts and The Knight Foundation. In 2008 , Dmitri was one of 5 arti sts in Ameri ca selected by Japan-US Friendship Commi ssion for The Creative Artist Fellowship, a joint effort of N EA and Japan's Ministry of Cultu re. He spent 5 months in Japan developing new skills, witn essing puppetry traditions and meeting colleagues. In 2009, "Pupp etry Internation al" publi shed their first list of "40 und er 40 " including Dmitri. He is currencl y surveying The Cook/Mark s Collection, one of the most important puppetry collection s in the world with over 5,000 works spanning a c12uple centuries and man y global culture s. Craig Trompeter (Music Director) has performed in concert and over the airwaves with Second City Musick, Music of the Baroque, the Chicago Symphony , Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, the Cal Players, the Oberlin Con sort of Viols, and Great Lakes Baroque. He has performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Art Institute of Chicago, the Glimmerglass Festival, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Valletta International Baroque Festival in Malta. He has appeared as soloist at the Ravinia Festival, the annual conference of the American Bach Society, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and with Music of the Baroque. Trompeter has recorded works of Mozart , Biber, Boismortier, Marais, Handel, Green e, Henry Eccles, and a potpourri of Elizabethan composers on the Harmonia Mundi, Cedille, and Centaur labels. As a modern cellist, he was a founding member of the Fry Street String Quartet. He premiered several chamber operas by MacArthur Fellow John Earon, performing as actor, singer and cellist. Trompeter has taught master classes at his alma mater, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Grinnell College , and the Chicago Musical College . In 2003 he founded the Fefdenkrais" Center of Chicago where he teaches Awareness 7hrough Movement" and Functional Integration" He has given Feldenkrai s workshops throughout th e nation in universities, music conservatories, and dance studios. He is Artistic Director of Chicago's acclaimed Haymarket Opera Company which specializes in period performance s of 17th- and 18th-centur y opera and oratorio. David Walker (Theorbo) has performed extensively throughout the United States as lutenist and guitarist, earning praise for his "surety of technique and expressive elegance," (Columbus Dispatch) as well as his "tremendous dexterity and careful control" (Bloomington Herald Times). David has appeared with such ensembles as Boston Baroque , Chatham Baroque, Clarion Music Society, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, and Tempesta di Mare , and is a memb er of the chamber ensemble Ostraka . He has performed in numerous baroque opera production s, including engagements with Glimmerglass Opera and the WolfTrap Opera Company . Festival highlights include the Savannah /',_. -_-. ,;,. ,f'. 0 Music Festival, Indianapolis Early Music Festival, and solo recitals for the Bloomington Early Music Festival and the University of Louisville Guitar Festival. Recording credits include Ostraka's critically acclaimed debut, Division, and Boston Baroque's 2015 Gramm y-nominated recording of Claudio Monteverdi 's If Ritorno d 'Ufisse in Patria. David studied with Nigel North at Indiana University and privatel y with Patrick O'Bri en . Suzanne G. Cusick (guest scholar), Professor of Music on the Faculty of Arcs and Science at New York Univers ity has publi shed extensively on gender and sexuality in relation to the musical cultures of early modern Italy and of contemporary Nort h America, includin g in the collection s Musicology atzd Difference, Queering the Pitch, and Audible Traces. Her feminist readings of early modern music and mu sical cu lture have app eared in JAMS, Early Music, lhe Cambridge Companion '. •... to Monteverdi, and the Brazilian jou rnal Per Musi . Cus ick's b,9ok, Francesca Caccini at the Medici Court: Mu sic and the Circulation of Power (Chicago, 2009), received the 2010 book prize of the Society for the Stud y of Early Modern Women. Since 2003 she has edited Women and Music. A journal of Gender of Culture, the first journal (and still th e only English-language journal) focused on the relation ship of gender and sexuality to mu sical cultur e. She currentl y studie s the use of noi se, mu sic and "gender coercion" in the det ention and interrogation of pri soner s held during the 21st-century's "war on terror ," work for which she received the Philip Brett Award given by the LGBTQ Study Group of the American Musicological Society in 2007 . The Producers Alexa Sand is Associate Professor of Art Hi sto ry, Assistant Dep artm ent H ead of Arc and Design, and Faculty Fellow in the Office of Research and Gradu ate Studies . H er scholarship concern s lacer medieval French and Engli sh manu script illumination and sma ll-scale sculpture. Her book , Vision, Devotion, and Self Representation in Late Medie val Art app eared in 2014, and she was recently selected as a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center for the Advanced Study of the Visual Arcs at the National Gallery in Washin gton , D .C. Christopher M. Scheer is the Associate Professor of Musicology at USU, Director of the Music Dep artment Academic Area, Director of the Performance Practice Institute, and Curator of the Museum + Mu sic Series at the No ra Eccles Harri son Museum of Art. H e is a scholar of lace nin eteenth- and early rwentieth-century British Musical Culture and co-editor of, and contributor to , the recent volum e The Sea in the British Musical Im agination published by Boydell in 2015.
