Fiscal Year 2015-2016 DigitalCommons@USU Report for Fiscal Year 2015-2016 Prepared by: Dylan Burns, Digital Scholarship Librarian               Danielle Barandiaran, IR Coordinator  DigitalCommons repository is a service of the Utah State University Merrill-Cazier Library     Executive Summary  DigitalCommons@USU is the institutional repository (IR) of Utah State University (USU) and as such strives to capture and archive the creative and scholarly output of USU’s faculty, staff, and students. This content includes, but is not limited to, articles, conference proceedings, historical records, journals, lectures, presentations, and student work. DC is an open access repository providing unrestricted, global access to tens of thousands of resources.  The function of DC falls squarely within the overall mission of the Merrill-Cazier Library—connecting people with information, supporting inquiry, discovery, and engagement by providing access…facilitating the use of information in teaching, learning, and research.  Since its launch in 2008, DC has grown to include more than 51,000 full text documents in addition to over 68,000 metadata records. The full text items in DC have collectively been downloaded more than 5 million times with more than a million of those coming within the fiscal year 2015-2016.  DC is administered by USU Libraries and is managed by the Digital Initiatives Department. Current staff includes the Head of Digital Initiatives, Becky Thoms; Digital Scholarship Librarian, Dylan Burns; the IR Coordinator, Danielle Barandiaran; and four part-time student assistants.    New equipment and ever-changing needs of the Library and campus require continual review of procedures and processes. Downloads from 2008 and forward:     Since the beginning of the repository in late 2008 we have seen an increase of total downloads from 3359 the first year to a total of over 5.5 million in July 2016. This was a growth of over 1 million downloads in the past year. The copy of the thesis/dissertation deposited in DC is now considered the copy of record. this transition of Plan A Theses and Dissertations to all digital is an opportunity to streamline and adjust some of our workflows. In the case of embargoed work, a student will be required to deposit a bound copy, and the Library will facilitate the process of binding personal copies for students who choose to do this. This process will continue to be handled by Acquisitions.    The absence of a scholarly communications librarian and continuing departmental changes were a challenge for the growth and expansion of DigitalCommons.  The addition of new conferences and journals this year are promising but changed how much we were able to digitize existing materials.  Use of third party services such ResearchGate and Academia.edu by faculty is on the rise. This needs to be part of the ongoing discussion about the future of DC and its role within in the Library and across campus.  Looking Ahead   Upcoming Projects   Bee Lab- Approximately 17,000 reprints, some of which will be deposited in DigitalCommons (as copyright allows).    iUtah and CUAHUSI watershed data.   Goals for 2016/2017   Target departments and colleges that are not heavily invested already in Digital Commons. As is shown in the chart above, we have heavy investment from Natural Resources, Education, and Science and less involvement from Business and Arts. In the next year we should work with Subject Liaisons within these colleges and with faculty who have already deposited work in DigitalCommons to promote more involvement from these colleges.   IR staff and administrators are working with bepress to set up an Amazon S3 preservation system to back up and preserve the assets in DigitalCommons. Amazon S3 is fully integrated with DigitalCommons and will allow ease of deposit and backup.      Design and promote a Selected Works Workshop for faculty who are interested in scholarly communication and promotion.   Work with RGS to build Selected Works portfolios for student researchers, especially those with fellowships, URCO, or Honors work.   Streamline the ETD process through the use of DocuSign as well as solidifying workflows.
