The first, and mostcommon source, is over thecounter drugs, labeled forspecific uses. He cannotlegally use it in any otherway.These same guidelinesmust be applied to all feedadditive medications aswell. Educate employeeson drug administra-tion practices and theimportance of pre-venting drug resi-dues.When using any drugs infood producing animals,follow these precautionarymanagement steps to avoidresidues:If the half-life itself isextended, because theillness being treated slowsdown the normal bodyprocesses, then the reten-tion time of drug residuescould be greatly extended.For instance, if the lengthof half-life were doubled inthe examples listed above,the time required for with-drawal or withholding wouldbe extended from 30 to 60hours and from 30 to 60days.If the half life of a par-ticular drug is 3 hours,almost all of the drug willhave been eliminated by 30hours after administration.If the half-life is 3 days,then it will take 30 days fora similar reduction. Thus,doubling the dose of druggiven should only extendthe time by one half-life toachieve near completeremoval from the body.(milk) or withholding (meat)periods are established,based on the half life of thedrug in a specific class ofanimal. A half-life is thetime required to reduce byone-half the residues of thedrug present. In 10 half-lifeperiods, 99.9% of the drugresidue will have beeneliminated from the animal.m1888The term withholding isassociated with drug use inrelation to animals mar-keted for slaughter andmeat use. The withdrawalThe term withdrawal isused to refer to milk andthe time from last drug usein the lactating dairy cowuntil marketing of the milkfrom that individual cow.and will detect a broadrange of drugs, while othersare very specific and wouldonly detect one or a fewdrugs. The sensitivity ofthe tests also varies. Pro-ducers using these testsmust understand the spe-cific limitations of each testproduct and use it accord-ingly. otherwise, the pro-ducer may test an animal atthe farm and determinethat all residues have disap-peared only to later havethe milk or carcass con-demned at the processor orpacking plant.
