PROPOSAL TO CONDUCT ANALYSIS OFSEISMIC ACTIVITY ON THE KILAUEA EAST RIFT ZONESubmitted by:Dr. Patricia CooperandDr. Greg MooreGeophysicsThe geophysics program has the potential to provide a numbe rof types of information to the resource assessment and reservo irmanagement effort. However, because of the Federal restriction onparticipation by the USGS in the State's geothermal program and t heabsence of a strong electrical geophysics group at SOEST, only twotypes of analyses can be undertaken in the near term: gravity a ndseismic studies of the rift systems associated with potent ia lgeothermal areas. Gravity surveys over the rift will enable us t obetter define the width of the dike complex within the rift and may .give us some indications of how far away from the surfaceexpression of the rift deep drilling could encounter a therma l 'anomaly. Preparation of a proposal to conduct seismic surveys onthe island of Hawaii is presently underway and will be provided tothe GTAC at a later date.Seismic surveys may be able to provide structural informationon the rift zones, indications of fluid flow within theirhydrothermal systems, and the response of the hydrothermal systemto development. The current seismic proposal will attempt to mapconcentrations of seismic activity within the rift to determinewhether there is a correspondence between the activity a ndreservoir productivity or fluid flow within the rift. The wor kwill be performed using pUblicly available seismic data from t h eexisting network on Kilauea and will also obtain data from a moredensely spaced array of seismic instruments that will be borrowedfrom the National Science Foundation. Acquisition of currentseismic activity data within the rift will also provide informationregarding typical pre-development baseline seismicity with which tojUdge the impacts of reinjection of geothermal fluids and possib l yenable us to use any changes in seismic activity to track t hemovement of reinjectate within the rift zone. The ability t operform the latter could prove very valuable in demonstrating a nypotential for contamination of shallow drinking water supplies or ,al ternatively, in demonstrating that such is not occurring a ndhence, allaying fears of contamination where none exists.A separate effort will attempt to perform seismic profiling ofthe rift to better define the structure of the dike complex. Thi swork will require access to one or more deep wells on the rift thatare capable of accepting a retrievable downhole geophone. Surfaceseismic signals will be generated using an "airgun" that will bedetected by the subsurface geophone. Analysis of the signals willprovide data that will support the analysis of natural seismicityand will enable us to determine whether a more sophisticated arrayof downhole geophones and surface sources could be used to betterdefine the structure of the rift.The work proposed here will be a unique application of seismicanalysis to the Hawaiian geothermal system and hence, we cannot becertain that all of the information that is hoped for will beobtained. Hence, the work plan in the attached proposal hasattempted to minimize costs by relying heavily on the use ofequipment provided by outside institutions.
