JOHN2AFTER THE CLOSE of active hostilities in thePacific in 1945, the United States Navy made itpossible for the University of Hawaii to senda scientific reconnaissance party into the Caro-line Islands, even though thousands of Japanesemilitary prisoners and a few detachments ofhostile "hold-out" bands were still there . Plantcollections were made on Kusaie Island fromDecember 24 to 26, 1945; and in the PalauGroup, on Angaur Island, on January 2, 1946.Below are listed the species taken which havenot previously been recorded from these islandsor for which the vernacular names used by thenatives have not been recorded.
