Agricultural Dust Explosions in 2008*  There were 19 dust explosions reported in the U.S. in 2008 according to Kingsly Ambrose, Assistant Professor, Kansas State University.  This compares to 7 in 2007 and a ten-year average of 9.4 explosions.  There were no fatalities and 9 injured.  The explosions were in 14 grain elevators, 4 feed mills, and 1 in a cereal plant.  The probable ignition source was identified in 2 cases as sparks, 1 overheated bearing, 1 damaged light, and 15 were unknown.  Fuel sources were identified as 14 from corn, 4 were mixed feed, and 1 was unknown.  Dust explosions occurred in eleven different states: Iowa (4), Minnesota (4), Illinois (3) and 1 each in Nebraska, Texas, Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri South Dakota, Arizona, and Delaware. Agricultural Dust Explosions in 2007*  There were 7 dust explosions reported in the U.S. in 2007 according to Kingsly Ambrose, Assistant Professor, Kansas State University. This compares to 9 in 2006 and a ten-year average of 9.3 explosions.  There were no fatalities and 5 injured.  The explosions were in 5 grain elevators, 1 feed mill, and 1 ethanol plant.  The probable ignition source was identified in 1 case as fire, 1 from a collapse, and 5 were unknown.  Fuel sources were identified as 4 from corn, 1 from barley, 1 was mixed feed, and 1 was unknown.  Dust explosions occurred in seven different states: 1 each in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin. The explosions were in 5 grain elevators, 2 feed mills, 1cereal plant, and 1 packaging plant.  The probable ignition source was identified in 3 cases as fires, 1 electrical spark, and 5 were unknown.  Fuel sources were identified as 6 from corn, 2 were feed, and 1 was unknown.  Dust explosions occurred in eight different states: 2 in Idaho, 1 each in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Texas, Utah, and Michigan.
