You will recall that I approved the Academic Senate resolution relative to the establishment of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women but raised two questions with regard to the proposed bylaws change. The material which you have now forwarded to me clarifies the questions which I had, and I am pleased to endorse and approve the proposed bylaws for the Status of Women Standing Committee. As this committee functions during the next year, I would hope that the Academic Senate would again review the issue of the type of charge which the committee should have based upon a year or so of experience with it. In addition, I would hope that the committee would work closely with the Equal Opportunity Advisory Council. Lamou~i ~~a1r Academic Senat7u~1'"-Subject: 	 Proceedings of the Academic Senate, March 4, 1986 RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH STANDING COMMITTEE ON STATUS OF WOMEN (AS-198-86/AHCWI) and RESOLUTION ON BYLAWS FOR THE STATUS OF WOMEN STANDING COMMITTEE OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE (AS-20 1-86/C&BC) The attached two resolutions leading to, and establishing an Academic Senate standing committee on Status of Women, were both adopted unanimously. This is truly a step forward for our campus! In substantive and probing discussions with some of our campus women, I am impressed by both their need and their positive outlook. My comment to them has been that once male-female equality is achieved, there would no longer be need for the committee. I have had concurrence with this premise and to date this concept has not been challenged. In the Academic Senate Constitution and Bylaws, there is no built-in sexual bias. It is our cultural heritage which tends to slow the progress of equality. Formation of this standing committee on women will be helpful in overcoming cultural bias. Your wholehearted approval followed by implementation of committee goals is recommended. Approval of the related bylaws is, however, withheld pending clarification. As chair of both the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, and the former Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women, would you please visit informally with the women involved, and also with Howard West? I would then appreciate the submission of your recommendation to this office. If the Academic Senate Executive Committee is able to accommodate your recommendation, it may not be necessary to return the Bylaws to the floor of the Senate. The second point has to do with the ambiguity of the committee responslbil itles. In my opinion the effectiveness of the committee could be Improved by more clarity as to Its functfo~
