KingReports of producers to the Illinois Geological Survey show that the amountof agstone (ground limestone and dolomite) used for soil improvement in Illinoisduring 1947 amounted to more than 5,180,000 tons (table 1). During 1947 the demandfor this mineral material continuedand far exceeded the supply. Manyproducers reported acute labor short-age, and this, together with increasedwages and higher costs of supplies andequipment, curtailed production. Inother instances unfavorable weatherconditions and floods hindered bothproduction and sales.Of the 187 plants reporting on 1947operations, 9 percent had discontinuedoperations, 2 percent changed owner-ship, and 19 percent were idle. Table2 shows the use of agstone on Illinoisfarms during the years for which fig-ures are available.During 1947 agstone was producedin 47 of the 102 counties of the State.Of the total agstone used during theyear, 90.5 percent was produced inIllinois.' Bureau of Mines, 1927-29; canvass byIllinois Agriculture Association, 1930;canvass by Illinois Geological Survey,1931-1947.Table 3 gives the use of agstone bydistricts and by counties comprisingeach district, showing the amount pro-duced in Illinois and in other states.These data are from producers who reported sales of agstone in specific coun-ties. Production not accounted for in the county totals is given at the bottom ofthe table marked "counties not specified." Several counties, particularly RockIsland and Vermilion, show abnormally low tonnage. This is because someproducers in these and other counties did not report their agstone productionas distributed by counties, and therefore the proper allocation could not bemade. The total production figures of these producers are included in "countiesnot specified." This amounted to 9.5 percent of the total used in Ill-inois.Table 5 gives the total quantity of agstone produced in Illinois which wasmarketed in other states.
