A recent music video has reignited the conversation about violence against women (VAW) in México. The video called ‘Fuiste Mía’ (or ‘You were mine’) by singer Gerardo Ortiz has generated a heated conversation about the way men and women are portrayed in the media, and the role media plays in normalizing VAW. The graphic video, which was temporarily removed from YouTube, showed the protagonist played by Ortiz himself tying his partner up, sexually objectifying her, putting her in the trunk of a car, and then setting the car on fire after he discovers she is having an affair. In the video, Ortiz also kills his partner’s lover at gunpoint

ha  generado  unaconversación  muy  divida  acerca  de  la  manera  en  que  los  hombres  y  las  mujeres  sonrepresentados  en  los medios  de  comunicación,  y  como estos  a  su  vez  normalizan  la  violenciacontra  la mujer.  El  video  grafico,  el  cual  fue  removido  temporalmente  de  YouTube, muestra  alprotagonista  interpretado  por  el mismo Gerardo Ortiz  amordazando  a  su  pareja, metiéndola  albaúl de un automóvil, y prendiéndole fuego al coche después de que descubre que su pareja leesta siendo infiel. En el video, Ortiz también mata al amante de su pareja.Los críticos del video argumentan que en un país como México donde 6 de cada 10 mujeres de15  años  o  más  han  vivido  alguna  forma  de  violencia  física,  emocional,  o  sexual  durante  eltranscurso de su vida; donde el 32 por ciento de las mujeres reportan haber vivido intimidación,acoso o violación sexual; y donde aproximadamente 6 feminicidios (definido como las diferentesexpresiones de violencia que viven las mujeres, las cuales atentan contra sus derechos humanos,y  culminan  en  su  muerte  violenta)  ocurren  diariamente,  contenido  como  el  del  video  de  Ortiznaturaliza la violencia contra la mujer y hace ver el comportamiento criminal de manera aceptable(Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Georgrafía, 2015; Lagarde y de los Ríos, 2010).El video, el cual ha posicionado la discusión sobre los derechos de la mujer y el feminismo en laplataforma nacional en México, ha reavivado el movimiento para abordar, prevenir, y erradicar laviolencia  contra  la  mujer,  lo  que  algunos  están  llamando  la  Primavera  Violeta.  Esto  fueejemplificado  por  el  llamado  nacional  espontaneo  en  las  redes  sociales  que  atrajo  a miles 2/3Sin  embargo,  a  pesar  de  las  discusiones  y movilizaciones masivas  para  erradicar  la  violenciacontra  la mujer  en México,  algunos  de  los  fans  de Ortiz  han  tomado  las  redes  sociales  comoplataforma  para  argumentar  que  en  vez  de  enfocarse  en  un  video musical  ficticio,  los  críticosnecesitan  enfocarse  en  los  “verdaderos”  problemas  que  enfrenta  México,  como  la  violenciacausada  por  la  guerra  contra  el  narcotráfico,  la  economía  rezagada,  o  los  escándalos  decorrupción  que  han  caracterizado  la  administración  del  Presidente Enrique Peña Nieto. Ortiz  yotros  cantantes  de  música  regional  mexicana,  un  genero  de  música  muy  popular  en  México,también  han  dicho  que  comparado  con  el  contenido  en  las  telenovelas  y  otros  shows  detelevisión,  el  video  musical  de  Ortiz  no  contiene  “algo  fuera  de  lo  ordinario.”  Por  lo  tantocuestionan  la  publicidad  negativa  que  ha  recibido  Ortiz,  y  aseguran  que  aquellas  personas  aquienes no les guste el video simplemente se autocensuraran.Después de seguir las discusiones que generó el video dentro y fuera de las redes sociales, mesentí decepcionada de que las preocupaciones sobre el contenido del video fueran descartadastan  rápidamente.  La  respuesta  de  Ortiz  y  los  otros  cantantes  de  música  regional  mexicanaparecen sugerir que está bien producir contenido violento porque otros hacen lo mismo. Tambiénparecen  ignorar que  la sociedad en  la que vivimos hoy día, donde  los medios de comunicaciónestán  tan entrelazados a nuestras vidas diarias,  los medios y  la cultura popular  representan uninstrumento  poderoso  y  penetrante  que  continuamente  nos  insinúan  imágenes  y  mensajes  anuestras conscientes. Estos mensajes e imágenes, como las del video musical de Ortiz, influyenla  manera  en  que  entendemos  nuestro  ambiente  social,  lo  que  aceptamos  como  uncomportamiento  masculino  y  femenino  ‘apropiado,’  y  lo  que  aceptamos  como  algo  natural  onormal  en  nuestras  relaciones,  incluyendo  el  sexismo  y  la  violencia  contra  la  mujer  tanproblemática hoy en México, Latinoamérica, y el resto del mundo (Wood, 1994).Una y otra vez  la  industria de películas, videos musicales, revistas y anuncios de televisión nosrefuerzan  imágenes  de  las  mujeres  como  bonitas;  enfocadas  en  el  ambiente  privado,  en  losquehaceres del hogar, y cuidando a la familia; como amas de casa leales, ángeles, y/o victimasen  necesidad  de  protección.  Las  mujeres  que  se  desvían  de  estos  roles  son  pintadas  comovillanas frías y agresivas, brujas, o mujerzuelas, descripciones que continuamente se utilizan parajustificar la violencia dirigida hacia ellas (Wood, 1994). Esta misma industria de películas, videosmusicales,  revistas  y  anuncios  de  televisión  juegan  un  rol  importante  en  la  construcción  demasculinidades  hegemónicas,  que  atribuyen  características  a  los  ‘hombres  de  verdad’  comoprofesional  y  económicamente  exitosos  en  el  ámbito  público,  físicamente  fuertes,  agresivos,heterosexuales, y generalmente en posiciones de dominio sobre las mujeres (Kareithi, 2014). Elvideo de “Fuiste Mia” es un perfecto ejemplo de ello. Y mientras que no estoy sugiriendo que losmedios de comunicación son el único factor que contribuye a la violencia, hay creciente evidenciaque  sugiere  de  manera  general  que  exponerse  a  la  violencia  por  medio  de  los  medios  decomunicación aumenta  la aceptación y el  riesgo de desarrollar conductas violentas  (Huesmannand Taylor, 2005). En efecto,  la respuesta de Ortiz a sus críticos refleja que tan peligrosamentenormalizadas están estas actitudes, tanto en la cultura popular como en la sociedad en general.Es importante destacar que el video de Ortiz es uno de varios videos que en los últimos 6 mesesha  generado  discusiones  sobre  la  violencia  contra  la mujer  en México.  El  pasado Octubre  porejemplo,  un  conductor  de  televisión  en Ciudad  Juárez,  una  ciudad  conocida mundialmente  porsus altos  índices de feminicidio, acoso sexualmente a su compañera de  trabajo en un show envivo. En el video, Tania Reza se aleja de Enrique Tovar después de que éste le toca las piernasrepetidamente. Momentos más tarde Tovar procede a abrazar a Reza y le toca los senos no unasino  dos  veces.  Cuando  Reza  expresa  su  disconformidad,  Tovar  se  disculparse  con  lostelevidentes  por  la  reacción  de  su  compañera  e  indica  que  Reza  esta  ‘un  poquito  hormonal.’Mientras que Reza y Tovar aparecen en un video subsecuente donde los dos indican que todo fuepre­grabado y una broma, Reza después utiliza su cuenta de Facebook para aclarar que Televisa,la compañía de medios de comunicación más grande de Latinoamérica, la forzó a mentir sobre elacoso  sexual  que  vivió  en  el  episodio  en  cuestión.  Los  dos  anfitriones  del  show  fueronposteriormente despedidos de su trabajo.5/24/2017 yeconómicas que la violencia tiene para la mujer, el hombre, y nuestra sociedad en general, y elcaso de Reza y Tovar es clave para ilustrar porque éste es un tema importante. Mientras que losdos anfitriones del show  fueron despedidos, Reza primero  fue victima de violencia de genero yluego fue castigada por hablar en contra de lo que le sucedió. En otras palabras, el acoso sexualque sufrió Reza no sólo  le afecto su bienestar  físico y emocional, sino que  también  impacto sumanera de sustentarse económicamente.A  los  fans  de  Ortiz  y  otros  que  sugieren  que  necesitamos  enfocarnos  en  los  “verdaderos”problemas  que  enfrenta  México  en  vez  de  en  un  video  musical  ficticio,  les  respondo  que  losmedios  y  la  cultura  popular  juegan  un  papel  importante  en  algunos  de  estos  problemas.Asimismo,  la evidencia con relación al  impacto que tienen los medios de comunicación sobre laviolencia  contra de  la mujer es  real  y necesitamos priorizarla  junto a otros problemas sociales.Descartarla  sugiere  que  prevenir  la  violencia  contra  la  mujer  no  es  una  causa  digna,  y  estodeshumaniza  a  la  mujer.  También  ofusca  el  hecho  de  que  la  violencia  contra  la  mujer  es  unproblema de salud pública, donde  las mujeres que son victimas/sobrevivientes de violencia sonsignificativamente  más  vulnerables  a  desarrollar  problemas  de  salud  a  corto  y  largo  plazo,incluyendo  muerte  y  lesión,  depresión,  dependencia  a  substancias  como  el  alcohol,  contraerinfecciones de transmisión sexual, embarazos no deseados, aborto, y tener bebés de bajo peso(WHO, 2013).Si  verdaderamente  pretendemos  abordar,  prevenir  y  erradicar  la  violencia  contra  la  mujer,necesitamos  entender  los  factores  que  contribuyen  a  la  normalización  y  la  aceptación  deactitudes violentas hacia la mujer (Huesmann and Taylor, 2005). Evaluar críticamente y retar  lasrepresentaciones  en  los  medios  de  comunicación  que  refuerzan  imágenes  de  la  mujer  y  elhombre  de  manera  sexista,  estereotípica,  y  poco  saludable  son  parte  importante  del  proceso(Vega Montiel  2014; Wood, 1994).  Así  como  también  lo  es  explorar  continuamente  la  relaciónentre el contenido violento en los medios y su impacto en la violencia que vivimos en la vida real.En  efecto,  las  miles  de  manifestantes  que  se  movilizaron  para  hacer  un  llamado  al  fin  de  laviolencia  contra  la  mujer  el  24  de  Abril  están  retando  el  sistema  que  normaliza  este  tipo  deviolencia.  Estas  llamadas  para  erradicar  la  violencia  contra  la  mujer,  así  como  también  suspropuestas para solucionar el problema no deben de ser ignoradas, ya que solamente abordandolas  causas  y  manifestaciones  múltiples  de  este  tipo  de  violencia,  podremos  abordar like Mexico where 6 out of 10 women who are 15 years or olderhave experienced some form of physical, emotional or sexual violence during their lifetime; where32  percent  of  women  report  to  have  experienced  intimidation,  sexual  harassment  or  sexualassault; and where approximately 6 feminicidios (defined as the different expressions of violencewomen face, which violates their human rights, and culminates in their violent death) occur on adaily  basis,  content  like  the  one  in  Ortiz’  music  video  naturalizes  VAW  and  makes  criminalbehavior seem acceptable (National Institute of Statistic and Geography, 2015; Lagarde y de losRíos, 2010).The  video,  which  has  placed  the  discussion  of  women’s  rights  and  feminism  center  stage  inMexico,  has  refueled  the  movement  to  address,  prevent,  and  eradicate  VAW,  what  some  arereferring  to  as  a  Primavera  Violeta  (Purple  Spring).  This  was  exemplified  by  a  spontaneousnational call on social media that turned out thousands across the country as  recent as Sunday,April 24, 2016 to call on the government to increase training and evaluation mechanisms for publicinstitutions in charge of addressing VAW, and for the end of media content that promotes sexist,stereotypical, and violent behavior towards women.However, despite the discussions and the massive mobilization to eradicate VAW in Mexico, someof Ortiz’  supporters  have  taken  to  social media  to  state  that  rather  than  focusing on a  fictitious5/24/2017 2/3music video, critics instead need to focus on the “actual” problems at stake in Mexico, such as theviolence caused by the war on drugs, the lagging economy, or the corruption scandals that havecharacterized the latest administration under President Enrique Peña Nieto. Ortiz and some of hisfellow singers of música  regional mexicana, a popular music genre  in Mexico, have also statedthat compared to the content in other forms of media like soap operas and TV shows, Ortiz’ musicvideo does not contain “something out of the ordinary.” They question the negative publicity Ortizhas received, and sustains that people who don’t like the video will simply self­censor.After having followed the discussions the video generated on­ and offline, I was disappointed thatconcerns about the content of the video were so quickly dismissed. The response of Ortiz and hisfellow singers seemed to suggest that it is okay to produce violent content because others do thesame.It also seemed to ignore how in today’s society, where media is so interwoven into our dailylives, media and pop culture  represent pervasive and powerful  tools  that  continuously  insinuateimages  and messages  into  our  consciousness.  These  images  and messages,  like  the  ones  inOrtiz’ music  video,  influence  the way we  come  to  understand  our  social  environment, what weaccept as ‘appropriate’ masculine and feminine behavior, and what we accept as natural or normalin our relationships, including the sexism and VAW so problematic today in Mexico, Latin America,and the rest of the world (Wood, 1994).Time  and  again  the  movie  industry,  music  videos,  magazine  and  TV  ads  reinforce  images  ofwomen as pretty; as being focused on the private sphere, on housework, and caring for family; asloyal  housewives,  angels,  and/or  victims  in  need of  protection. Women who deviate  from  theseroles are depicted as  cold and aggressive  villains, witches, and whores, which  is often used  tojustify  the  violence  directed  at  them  (Wood,  1994).  The  same  movie  industry,  music  videos,magazine  and  TV  ads  play  a  key  role  in  the  construction  of  hegemonic  masculinities,  whichascribe  characteristics  to  ‘real men’  as professionally  and economically  successful  in  the publicsphere, physically strong, aggressive, heterosexual and generally in positions of domination overwomen (Kareithi, 2014). The “Fuiste Mia” video is a case in point. And while I am not suggestingthat media  is  the only contributing  factor  to violence, mounting evidence more broadly suggeststhat exposure  to  violence  through media does  increase  the acceptance and  risk of engaging  inviolent behavior (Huesmann and Taylor, 2005). Indeed, Ortiz’ response to his critics reflects   justhow dangerously normalized these attitudes truly are, in popular culture and society more broadly.Further,  it’s  important  to note  that Ortiz’ video  is one of several videos  in  less  than 6 months  togenerate  discussions  about  VAW  in  Mexico.  Last  October  for  example,  a  male  TV  co­host  inCiudad  Juárez,  a  city  known  worldwide  for  its  high  rates  of  feminicide,  sexually  harassed  hisfemale  co­host  on  live  TV.  In  this  video,  Tania  Reza moves  away  from Enrique  Tovar  after  herepeatedly  touches  her  legs.  Tovar  then  hugs  Reza  and  seconds  later  proceeds  to  touch  herbreasts not once but twice. When Reza expresses her discomfort, Tovar proceeds to apologize toviewers for Reza’s reaction and states that she is ‘a little hormonal.’ While Reza and Tovar appearon a subsequent video, where they both state that the whole thing was pre­recorded and a joke,Reza  later uses her Facebook account  to clarify  that she was  forced  to  lie by her employers atTelevisa,  the  largest mass media  company  in  Latin America,  about  the  sexual  harassment  sheexperienced during the episode in question. Both TV hosts were subsequently fired.My  point  is  that  we  cannot  continue  to  ignore  the  social,  political  and  economic  implicationsviolence has on women, men and our society as a whole, and the case of Reza and Tovar is keyin  illustrating  why  this  is  important. While  both  TV  hosts  were  fired,  Reza was  first  a  victim  ofgendered  violence  and  was  later  punished  for  speaking  out  against  it.  In  other  words,  sexualharassment not only affected her physical and emotional well­being, but also negatively impactedher livelihood.To Ortiz’ supporters and others who suggest that we need to focus on the actual problems at stakein Mexico rather than a fictitious music video, I say that mass media and popular culture form anintegral aspect of  these actual problems. Furthermore,  the evidence of  the  impact media has onVAW  is  real  and  it  needs  to  be  prioritized  alongside  other  social  issues.  Dismissing  it  as  lessimportant suggests that preventing VAW in Mexico is not a worthy cause, and framing it as such5/24/2017 Commentsdehumanizes women. It also obfuscates the fact that violence is a public health concern, wherebywomen who are victims/survivors of violence are significantly more vulnerable to short and long­term  negative  health  outcomes,  including  death  and  injury,  depression,  substance  abuse,exposure to sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and low birth­weight innewborns (WHO, 2013).If  we  are  truly  to  address,  prevent  and  eradicate  VAW we  need  to  understand  the  factors  thatcontribute  to  the  normalization  and  acceptance  of  violent  behavior  towards women  (Huesmannand  Taylor,  2005).    Critically  assessing  and  challenging  media  representations  that  reinforceunhealthy,  sexist  and  stereotypical  portrayals  of  men  and  women  is  an  important  part  of  thisprocess  (cf.  Vega  Montiel  2014).  As  is  our  continued  exploration  of  the  relationship  betweenviolent media content and its impacts on the violence we experience in the real world.Indeed,  the  thousands  of  protesters who mobilized  to  call  for  an  end  to VAW on April  24th  arechallenging this very system in which such violence is normalized. These calls for the eradicationof VAW and an adequate multi­pronged approach  to  the  problem must  not  go  unanswered;  foronly  by  addressing  the  multifaceted  and  complex  causes  and  manifestations  of  VAW,  can  weengage in a more serious and effective conversation on the issue.  Adriana López holds an MSc  in Gender, Development and Globalizationfrom  the  Gender  Institute  at  London  School  of
