PanayotisAntoniadis.  The authors introduce the key topics that willbe covered in the series here. The  Internet  has  been  conceived  as  a  distributed,decentralized  and  self­organized  network.  However,  it  iscurrently being transformed to a highly centralized systemdominated  by  the  services  offered  by  big  corporationssuch as Google, Facebook, and Yahoo!, and surveilled byintelligence  agencies  such  as  the NSA  and GCHQ.  Thisevolution has important implications for both civil liberties,as  it affects privacy, security,  freedom of expression, andfor economic freedoms, as it creates concentration, walledgardens  and  unbalanced  terms  of  use.  Various  researchand activist projects worldwide try to avoid dependencies on such corporations and offer proposalsfor an alternative Internet, one which would rely on distributed architectures from infrastructures toservices: on community wireless networks, peer­to­peer applications, and distributed online socialnetworks.This series addresses the concepts and experiments that explore the possibility of such alternativeInternets.  It  builds  on  a  workshop  on  Alternative  Internet(s)  which  took  place  at  the  LSE  andexamined the techno­politics, architecture frameworks, governance and socio­cultural implicationsof  alternative  internet  projects.  It  considers  practitioner,  activist,  and  academic  perspectives  inorder  to  assess  the  techno­legal  feasibility  of  alternative  Internets,  understand  their  designrequirements  and  social  implications,  and  suggest  possible  ways  for  improved  networkgovernance  that would enable a wide diversity of options  in order  to avoid  the concentration ofpower and single points of failure.What are “alternative internet(s)”?The series will cover a wide range of enabling technologies:Community  wireless  networks:  built  with  grassroots,  flexible  network  architecture,  providing  analternative  ownership  structure,  free  access  to  the  Internet,  opportunities  for  community  building  andparticipatory design, and the option for local interactions outside the commercial Internet;Peer­to­peer  systems  and  encryption  that  enable  the  distributed  implementation  of  otherwisecentralized services  like searching, storage, content distribution, and accounting and have  formed thebasis  for  very successful applications such as BitTorrent  for  file sharing, Bitcoin  for online currencies,and many more;Distributed web­based social networks, such as Diaspora and Kune, which allow Internet users to buildtheir own online social networks and organise them according to their individual preferences in terms ofprivacy and filtering.Alternative internet(s): ‘media policy by other means’?Alternatives  can  help  to  avoid  self­censorship  and  allow  us  to  express  ourselves  in  the  publicsphere without  fear  of  algorithmic  control  and  surveillance. However,  there  are many 1 Commentthus calling for an interdisciplinary treatment. Our goal is to open the dialogue and bring togetherdifferent perspectives, keeping in mind the need for immediate action; the need for experimentingwith alternatives and complements at the technological, social, economic and political level.That  is  why  this  series  will  call  on  a  wide  range  of  analytic  and  interdisciplinary  perspectives,including:Computer  science/networking  design  and  architectural  choices  of  alternative  platforms  andarchitectures, centralised and decentralised options and their techno­legal consequences:The socio­economic impact at the local level, the creation of international communities of practices, thepolitical  implications  on  speech  of  autonomous  platforms  and  applications,  the  sustainability  ofcommons­based peer production and the governance of self­organized communities;The reflexive effect on media policies, competition law and telecommunication regulation of developingalternative,  independent  platforms and  simultaneously  using  them  to propose alternative political  andtechnical regulation of the networks.Some  of  the  perspectives  in  the  forthcoming  series  are  from  the  Scientific  committee  of
