JohnsonLSE’s Richard Stupart recommends South Sudan: a new history for a new nation to those wantingto gain a general understanding of the history of South Sudan, as well as seeking an introductionto it. There  are  precious  few  history  books  about  South  Sudan  that  look  beyond  its  recent  origins.South Sudan: a new history for a new nation is an excellent example of just such a work. DouglasH. Johnson is one of the world’s most eminently qualified authors for such an undertaking, havingspent many years chronicling the history of the region more broadly. Besides being involved as aresource person in the comprehensive peace agreement that led to South Sudan’s independence,he has contributed to the work of the Rift Valley Institute since 2010. The small physical size of thebook conceals the years of knowledge that have been put into it.South Sudan  offers  not  simply  a  fascinating  view  intothe  precolonial  history  of  what  is  now  modern  SouthSudan, but an insight into the connections between thepolitics of the region’s distant past and points of fracturein the country’s contemporary  landscape. Beginning asfar back as eleven  thousand years before  the present,the  book  rapidly  covers  a  history  of  the  region’sprecolonial kingdoms, the rise and fall of various tradingnetworks,  the  role  of  slavery  in  various  politicalformations,  colonialism  and  the  rise  of  contemporarySouth  Sudanese  nationalism.  Along  the  way,  we  areintroduced to figures of significance in the history of thecountry  that  go  beyond  the  usual  list  of  coup  leadersand heads of factions in the Sudan People’s LiberationArmy.The book, in fact, stands out in its attention to particularindividuals  and  stories  outside  of  the  usual  cast  ofheroes  and  villains,  balancing  out  periods  where–  forlack of historical evidence, or a need to avoid writing anopus – history necessarily  jumps centuries  in a matterof pages.  Its need  for brevity  is  the greatest weaknessof the book, though perhaps an unfair accusation to theauthor. The full history of north east Africa is far more than could ever fit into 184 pages, and it isimpressive just how much Johnson has managed to cover in these pages.That said, it would be remiss to see South Sudan purely as a work for historians. Doubtless, manywho  are  interested  in  the  practices  and  politics  of  precolonial  times  would  enjoy  the  overviewprovided  in  the  book,  but  the  value  of  Johnson’s  account  extends  beyond  this.  There  exists  atendency  in  conflict  studies  to  explain  conflicts  such  as  South  Sudan’s  in  the  narrow  terms  ofcontemporary history, which this book provides a valuable contribution to placing in context. SouthSudan did not appear ex nihilo on independence, politically and culturally speaking, and historiessuch  as  that  offered  by  South  Sudan  are  a  valuable  contribution  to  drawing  attention  torelationships  and  histories  that  both  structure  and  may  ultimately  contribute  towards  endingdecades of violence.6/7/2017 Africa at LSE – Book review – South Sudan: A new history for a new nation by Douglas H. Johnsonhttp://blogs.lse.ac.uk/africaatlse/2017/06/02/book­review­south­sudan­a­new­history­for­a­new­nation­by­douglas­h­johnson/ 2/2June 2nd, 2017 | Book Reviews, Featured, International Affairs | 0 CommentsThose looking for a comprehensive overview of modern South Sudan’s political dysfunction wouldbe  better  off  reading  Johnson’s  other  work,  The  Root  Causes  of  South  Sudan’s  Civil  Wars.Readers wanting  to  understand  something  of  the  history  of  the  country more  broadly,  or  thoseseeking an introduction to it would do well to read this excellent, compact history. South Sudan: A new history for a new nation. Douglas H. Johnson. Ohio University Press.2016Richard Stupart (@wheretheroad) is a PhD researcher at the LSE. His primary research interestsare media representation and humanitarian response, empathy and duty to distant suffering, andpractices of  bearing witness  in  conflict  reporting. Richard’s work has  included  reporting on postconflict recovery in northern Uganda, critiques of humanitarian response, and research periods inSouth Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.  The views expressed in this post are those of the author and in no way reflect those of theAfrica at LSE blog or the London School of Economics and Political Science.
