2017­6­2 Book: Making Sense of the Central African Republic | Justice and Security Research Programmehttp://blogs.lse.ac.uk/jsrp/2016/02/08/book­making­sense­of­the­central­african­republic/ 1/2Book: Making Sense of the Central African RepublicThe  JSRP  is  proud  to  introduce  a  new  volume  on  theCentral African Republic edited by our Research Director,Tatiana  Carayannis,  and  Yale  University  AssociateProfessor, Louisa Lombard.Lying at  the center of a  tumultuous region,  the Central AfricanRepublic and  its  turbulent history have often been overlooked.Democracy, in any kind of a meaningful sense, has eluded thecountry.  Since  the  mid­1990s,  army  mutinies  and  serialrebellion  in CAR have resulted  in  two major successful coups.Over the course of these upheavals, the country has become alaboratory  for  peacebuilding  initiatives,  hosting  a  two­decade­long  succession  of  UN  and  regional  peacekeeping,peacebuilding and special political missions.Tatiana  Carayannis,  the  Social  Science  Research  Council’sDeputy  Director  of  the Conflict  Prevention  and  Peace  Forum,and Yale University’s Associate Professor Louisa Lombard (asco­editors and chapter contributors) have brought  together  theforemost  experts  on  the  Central  African  Republic  in  MakingSense of  the Central African Republic. This much­needed volume, published by Zed Books  (USDistributor  –  University  of  Chicago  Press),  provides  the  first  in­depth  analysis  of  the  country’srecent history of rebellion, instability, and international and regional intervention.Making Sense of the Central African Republic was undertaken under the auspices of the SSRC’sConflict  Prevention  and  Peace  Forum,  founded  in  2000  in  response  to  the  Brahimi  Report,  toconnect UN decision­makers with scholars on and from conflict areas in which the UN is engagedand thus provide the UN with a deeper understanding of  these places and their people; and theJustice  and Security Research Programme  (JSRP),  a  global  research  consortium  based  at  theLondon  School  of  Economics  and  Political  Science.  SSRC  also  hosted  a  two­day  bookcontributors’ meeting  in  June  2014  to  give  the  authors  a  chance  to  offer  ideas,  reactions,  andcomments on the various chapters.Buy this bookTable of Contents1.
