(muffinn)The following three chapters deal with Turkish Cypriot civilsociety, political parties and institutions in light of the EU. In allthree chapters, Kyris makes a valid point by regularly addressingthe pre­ and post­accession periods. This helps the authorcarefully structure his narrative and tease out the differences andfactors that have influenced each aspect of the fields mentionedabove.As the book makes clear, there is a distinct but interwovenconnection between the two phases, as, for example, in the caseof civil society and political parties. On the one hand, thedifferences caused by the point of the rupture of accession areapparent in all aspects of Turkish Cypriot economic, political andsocial life. For example, before accession the anticipated benefitsof EU integration were a key reason that the Turkish Cypriotpublic supported reunification (67), while, as the author analysesin Chapter Five, the same happened with political parties. TurkishCypriot civil society and pro­European moderate political partiesseem to have responded in accordance as they both saw in theS.BernankeOctober 28th, 2015BookReview:Bosniaand theDestructionofCulturalHeritageby HelenWalaseket alOctober 27th, 2015European prospect a long and viable solution to their problemsand to the Cyprus Problem. On the other hand, the TurkishCypriot hard­line parties have been profoundly affected by, and toa large extent have represented, ‘patron state’ Turkishnationalism, and as such they have been in favour of acompromised solution to the Cyprus Problem, thus marking adistinct difference amongst Turkish Cypriot political parties (80­91). After accession, however, Europeanisation was seen morein relation to the financial and technical support of the EU as astrategy that could underpin a new skilled civil society distinctfrom the unprofessional one that existed before (68).Kyris makes relevant and interesting points by exploring theimportance of the regional dispute for domestic affairs,international isolation, the lack of recognition and the ‘patronstate’ factor as critical issues, and these lead him to notableinsights. For example, although Turkish Cypriots were absentfrom official negotiations, they have still been affected by EUpolicies. Kyris draws our attention to how and by which agentsTurkish Cypriot institutions have been affected; and in fact theseare Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus itself. By looking at thechanges that have impacted Turkish Cypriot institutions, Kyrisrightly argues that these reflect ‘an institutional change and an“ideational” Europeanisation via the socialization of the TurkishCypriots in the EU environment and the engagement with actorsthat share similar experiences of relations to the EU’ (101).It should be pointed out, however, that there is someinconsistency in relation to the writing of Turkish words. Forexample, some words follow the Turkish spelling, whilst in otherparts of the book they do not (for example, Turk/Türk,Kurtuluş/Kurtulus); also, the Ulusal Birlik Partisi (the NationalUnity Party) is mistakenly rendered as the Usual Bilik Partisi (xii),and Makarios is wrongly referred to as Makarios II instead ofMakarios III (31). These, however, are small issues that do notdeter from the strength of the study.The Europeanisation of Contested Statehood: The EU inNorthern Cyprus is a noteworthy and invaluable contribution inLog In
